Look at it from an individual perspective. In worship and prayer and serving God, the individual is focused on his/her relationship to God and their fellow human beings. Denominations, parishes, faiths draw large numbers of people to community worship, community fellowship, and communities open to working with and helping those in need. All of this is work on spiritual growth.

Politics is about earthly power to attain physical power over the people. There are people in religion who are also focused on gaining the support of the people. Where are the greatest number of people already organized into groups: Religious groups and political groups. It always calls to my mind the quote of, "Which way are the people going? I must run after them for I am their leader." There is no doubt that politics wants the support of well organized groups. No doubt that organized groups want the support of political leaders.

My point is that when an individual is focused on worship and service to God in one's daily life, there is no room for politics for there is no use for politics. In the same way, political groups are not going to try to spend time and money to influence a small group of twelve. That group is too small to be worth the time and expense. Plus, politics isn't the best way to work on one's spiritual growth as God--and God's will is the focus.

It's about power. The church wields it and the political leaders know and desire it.

Nor do said leaders always worship and serve God.....as I wrote in the OP.
