From a recent article at CNN.com, written by Gabrielle Giffords: America finds its voice on gun safety (Opinion) - CNN.com
"The toughest part has been the stories we so frequently hear about those whose lives are altered or ended because the wrong person got his or her hands on a gun. Some, like the massacre at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, dominate national headlines, but most never make the news. There are simply too many: 92 people killed with a gun each day. That's 33,000 people dead each year. And every year, 117,000 are shot and injured."
92 people a day!!! That's horrendous!!
Well, except that it's misleading and misrepresented in order to put forward a particular political perspective.
From their own reference, http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvsr/nvsr64/nvsr64_02.pdf"
"Firearm—In 2013, 33,636 persons died from firearm injuries in the United States (Tables 18 and 19), accounting for 17.4% of all injury deaths in that year. The age-adjusted death rate from firearm injuries (all intents) did not change significantly in 2013 from 2012. The two major component causes of firearm injury deaths in 2013 were suicide (63.0%) and homicide (33.3%). The age-adjusted death rate for firearm homicide decreased 5.3%, from 3.8 in 2012 to 3.6 in 2013. The rate for firearm suicide did not change significantly."
So, it isn't 92 people a day murdered. Wow --- you mean they tried to mislead us? Who woulda thunk that? Two thirds were suicides. 11 thousand were homicides.
In fact, if we read a little further ...
"31,240 persons died as the result of falls"
Almost three times as many people die from falls than from homicides.
"48,545 deaths occurred as the result of poisonings, 25.2% of all injury deaths (Table 18). The age-adjusted death rate for poisoning in 2013 (15.2 deaths per 100,000 U.S. standard population) increased significantly, 4.1% from the rate in 2012 (14.6). The majority of poisoning deaths were either unintentional (80.0%) or suicides (13.7%)."
So, over 4 times as many people died as the result of poisoning. Given the fact that about 6.500 were suicides, we can probably assume that the 21,000 who committed suicide by firearms would find a reasonable alternative in poison.
Of course, they could just get in their car and commit suicide by running headlong into a school bus, too.
