The Best State In America?

What’s your favorite state, if you have one? As a native Maine-Ah (where I currently live), I have also lived in Connecticut, Georgia and Florida. I really don’t have a favorite place, as there are were pluses to living in all those other states. I loved the culture, people, food, girls, music and weather down South and think that if I ever move somewhere else? Probably somewhere around Nashville, Tennessee or Austin, Texas (I’m a musician and kick butt music is my passion).

I also want to see Montana and the Midwest, before I leave this planet.

Do you have a favorite state?
There is no best state. There are pros and cons of living in every state. I have lived in nearly half of them. I have found that it is all about individual priorities, likes and dislikes. I have heard people say I would never live in a Red State. I love this state because they don't have an income taxes. This is the best state because it's most beautiful state. I love this place because we have great jobs, we the wonderful beaches, snow skiing, best parks, lowest taxes, best roads, etc, etc.

It's like asking what flavor of ice cream is best.

True. Some like living in current California. The rest of like America better.

California used to be my favorite state back in the 1980's. I saw parts of the old Route 66 at Santa Monica Pier.

My favorite state today would be Florida! I have loved Florida for awhile now. I would move there if I could.
I was going to say California myself. It is a very beautiful state.

Next I would say New Mexico, around the Farmington area. I just love the rock formations.

There are a lot of nice places. I’ve traveled all around the country and it’s amazing how the scenery changes depending on where you go. It’s like certain regions all have different biomes.

I didn't say anything about politics re: CA and FL. They are wonderful states as I've previously stated on this thread. They have excessive population for my liking. I live a rural life.

Florida still has a considerable amount of rural areas. I always liked it down there, away from the beaches and the Mouse.

I like living in the South. Georgia and Alabama have been home for years.

I've traveled extensively in the eastern half of the country. Not so much out west, but that will be remedied when my Sweetie retires next month and we start our travel plans.

I haven't driven in a major metropolitan area many times in the past ten years. That being said, I drove in many major cities in May of this year. Denver, KC, St. Louis, Atlanta, Tallahassee, Tampa etc. I don't much care for those type of places. I was really disappointed in what I saw in FL. Driving between Tallahassee and Tampa and Tampa to Gainesville, I was taken with the excessive traffic. I have relatives in the Tampa area and spent a few days. We spent many hours on surface streets and I was appalled at how long it took to get anywhere. I am glad to be back home where I can drive for 20 to 30 miles and never see another vehicle.

I like what you have said, Flopper. I have lived and traveled all up and down the East Coast throughout my life and, to split the hairline, it’s the here and now. The Present is my favorite place to be. From my experience, no matter where I go, the happiest and most prosperous folks live by that code. I used to be one of those “the grass is always greener over there” folks; but I have learned to really appreciate where I am - at least in my advancing age. The older I get, the younger minded I actually become (if that makes any sense).

I stopped drinking at the age of 21. I do use alcohol based mouthwash.... but I haven't been drunk since... a long time ago.
Good for you and congratulations. Not an easy thing to do, from what I understand.

I was just following up on your initial question.

Have a great one.

Thing is for a lot of people, most people, they escape reality.

The best state for a lot of people is their fantasy world, because reality sucks.

It's why we do drugs, alcohol, pets, sports, and it's why people do crazy politics. Trump's way of doing things allows people to forget their real life, pretend that this crazy stuff is real. And no, it's not just Trump, not just the right wing. The Dems do it to a certain extent too, people believed Obama would improve their miserable lives too, didn't happen.

Agreed, my friend. The best state is “sober,” I think and that applies to all vices - especially politics, nowadays. I personally think all of us in this country would benefit highly from a 12 step program. I believe in those steps.

White wimin here are really really white ...

You're right about the rain ... it's an all day drizzle event to get 1/4" ... and for 300 days a year we get our 6 to 8 foot annual totals ... just rarely really hard, though it can get that way ... the problem is a lack of police protection, poorly funded schools and zoning laws that all but prevent new housing to be built ...

... and don't forget hateful Californians coming up and being hateful ...

Thats why the Asian women are so attractive. They stay out of the sun if at all possible. Milky creamy soft smooth moist delicious……not leather and old spice.

I came to California, to San Francisco, in 1959. I had never seen a beautiful city before. I really had no idea that a city could be beautiful. But there it was, spread out like a jewelers tray. They called it Baghdad by the Bay. When my Dad's work changed and he got a job in Oakland, we moved, but I still worked in San Francisco. Oakland was gritty, half black, all dangerous but somehow, out of the blood and guts, the outlaw bike gangs kept some kind of order when the police brushed it all off. The most powerful was Hells Angeles, and I met Sonny Barger and dated one of the members. Oakland never felt unsafe. There wasn't anywhere I wouldn't go , or felt like I couldn't go.

After I got married, we moved south. I lived in Compton, which again, up until the riots in 1965 never felt unsafe. It was majority black, but nice people. Just ordinary people. After 1965, we had to move to Lakewood, a nice, solid middle class community where children played in the streets and we had block parties. Lakewood is no longer that community. Gangs moved in.

After my divorce, I moved to Redondo Beach and lived in a condo right on the beach. It was as close to paradise as I will ever get. Now the homeless have taken over the parks, the beaches are open latrines, the ocean is polluted. Random violence is common. A friend of mine who still lives in Redondo is cautious even going to the grocery store. I don't blame him. I was carjacked going to the grocery store. In Dana Point a man riding a bicycle was stabbed to death at a red light. The beautiful parks of Laguna Beach are covered with homeless tents and open air drug sales. Arching over all of this destruction is a state legislature that takes more and more and more money to support the criminals who will reliably vote democrat. If $7.00 a gallon gas wasn't enough, the state is now charging utilities by annual income rather than usage. I think that's what did it for my son. He was looking at high electric bills due to usage charges to astronomical electric bills based on his salary. He came home from work one day and announced that he had quit his job, put the house up for sale and put an offer in on a home in Idaho.

What happened to California is painful. Just painful. What happened to San Francisco is criminal.
For the Rest of America, the Song "California, Here We Come" Now Has a Frightening Meaning

Pundits tend to split Americans into geographical or racial or economic or even social factions for various reasons usually associated with politics. I've lived in a couple of different states and I can't tell you which is best. To borrow a phrase from Lee Greenwood, "I'm proud to be an American and at least I know I'm free". The best Country in the world hands down is the United States of America and we need to stop classifying Americans according to race and geographical location and unite under one Flag.

Not having the kind of skin that tans gracefully, I decided while I was in my teens that I liked being pale.

I lived in Florida when I was young in the 50's and early 60's and returned in the 70's for 20 years. I love old Florida when we could dive year round in the Keys for Florida Lobster. Dive in Crystal River and swim with the manatee. Took kids to the amusement park on the Rainbow River and of course Homosassa Springs and Wiki Watchee. and Cypress Gardens. I was in Florida about 7 or 8 years ago. I guess all that was gone. The heat and humid didn't bother me much but the traffic, crowds, and endless condos and retirement communities did.

Today I live in Western Washington not far from Seattle. Great summers and cool wet winters and only occasional snow but great skiing only 45 mins to an hour away. But for me I love the old growth forest with the giant cedars and Douglas firs, so green and so nice. Eastern Washington is entirely different, hotter summers, colder winters, and mostly farm country. It is of course republican country where western Washington is true blue.
