But then came Tuesday night’s debate between Trump and Kamala Harris – and that memorable moment when the moderator Linsey Davis of ABC News piped up with just a few words after Trump went into one of his evidence-free rants about babies being executed.
“There is no state in this country where it is legal to kill a baby after it’s born,” Davis said in an even tone. It didn’t take a lot of time, it did correct an oft-repeated lie and it did establish something important: the most egregious falsehoods might well be challenged by these moderators. The candidates were put on notice.

And that "clarification" is to be done by the debate opponent, not the moderator.
Again, not the role of debate moderators. Moderators do not challenge the debaters. That's the role of the debate opponent.
Any whoppers are to be addressed by the debate opponent, not the mods.
You also learn that you don't lie, and you have to prove your allegations not just blurt out tremendous falsehoods.
Life is not a debate. I was never on a debate team but I believe the moderators do call them out for lies, but they call all of them out. Both sides lied or exaggerate the truth. Immigrants eating our beloved pets is a very low bar for the moderator to intercede and say something. These aren't really debates, they opportunities for the candidates to pitch their spiels. Don uses them not to promote himself so much but to denigrate his opponents with viscous lies.
Participants usually don't lie like The Don either. Presidential debates don't follow standard rules of debate.
