When Elizabeth Warren took to X in early 2024 to acknowledge the blocked merger between JetBlue Airways and Spirit Airlines, she framed it as a clear consumer victory. She called the decision, which she argued would prevent fares from competition-induced creeping, a "Biden win for flyers." (1)
Those in favor of the merger, however, argued that it would have aided both airlines in their increasingly tenuous efforts to keep costs down. And, as it turns out, Spirit couldn't afford to keep those efforts up.

"Sustaining the business required hundreds of millions of additional dollars of liquidity that Spirit simply does not have and could not procure," Dave Davis, Spirit's President and Chief Executive Officer, said in a press release. Do you Republicans stand for anything? The choice was to allow the merger to go through or allow Spirit to go under. I mean first question, since when did Republicans start believing the government should prop up unprofitable businesses? I swear I must have missed that memo. Whatever happened to letting the markets decide?

Spirits business model fell apart, they are supposed to go under. It is the way the market works. And the merger would have resulted in tens of millions of customers paying higher fares with fewer choices. All to keep a bunch of employees working for a failing business employed? Damn, let them panhandle at the airport, it is the same damn thing.
