Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is making an epic and catastrophic blunder going to Taiwan! Speaker Pelosi has good intentions she was early to visit Ukraine after the Russian invasion which commenced on February 24 bolstering support for Ukraine and she often takes actions to support human rights, to a significant degree she is a lot like the former Senator John McCain who because of his heroic life was able to travel the world as an ambassador for democracy and human rights. But good intentions don't always translate into wise actions; during the Iraq war after Saddam Hussein was overthrown Paul Bremer the head of the provisional authority who was a dedicated public servant had good intentions in disbanding the then Iraq army which had the practical consequence of creating a lot of unemployed Iraqi soldiers in desperate need for an income which resulted in them joining the insurgency and ending up costing a lot of U.S. soldiers their lives and limbs. During the Afghanistan war the U.S. authorities responsible for building needed infrastructure for Afghanistan had good intentions paying for security, not a security payroll but a contract fee for security mind you, for road and utility projects so they could be built but the practical effect was that the U.S. government was in fact funding the Taliban.
The practical effect of Speaker Pelosi's visit to Taiwan will be catastrophic, America's interest will be hurt and hurt truly badly. The Chinese embassy in Washington has told the U.S. government that the Speaker should not make this trip that it will be viewed as a serious transgression by China, the Chinese Foreign ministry has said the same thing and in fact the President of China, President Xi Jinping, in this phone call with President Biden last week was reported to be more emphatic about the stakes when he said "when you play with fire don't be surprised if you get burned"!
Speaker Pelosi is a smart lady who in this instance is acting mind boggling stupid she is not fully considering who she is dealing with that is the Communist Chinese government. People are characterizing this issue as a matter where Chinese face is on the line here; that the Chinese Congress will be occurring this fall where Xi Jinping will be seeking an unprecedented third term as President of China and so he cannot let the insult of the person second in line to the Presidency of the United States, China's principle adversary, visit what China believes is an errant province (Taiwan) that is not properly submitting to the authority of China, this great insult cannot go unaddressed it must be met with a severe penalty to the country, the United States, responsible for this insult. But I think that this analysis only begins the full analysis here; the communist Chinese government has a long history of retaliation against what it perceives as transgressions by other parties. President Trump issued tariffs to try to reduce the massive trade deficit the U.S. runs with China and what did China do it issued retaliatory tariffs; the United States blocked and advocated against the Chinese telecom company Huawei from being permitted to build telephone system because the Chinese government on most important matters is zero trustworthy and would involve itself with Huawei violating American security and privacy and what did China do it blocked U.S. chip maker Qualcomm from acquiring NXP in response, the U.S. government said that Chinese companies listed on U.S. stock exchanges must cooperate with U.S. audits so investors can know their sound and their financial statement are accurate or they will get delisted and what did the Chinese government do it started creating obstacles to Chinese companies listing on U.S. exchanges. One can cite examples like this galore!
A prudent person would conclude that one can be guaranteed that if Speaker Pelosi makes this trip to Taiwan the Chinese government will retaliate and retaliate big! The politics/economics commentator, Thomas Friedman, in the New York Times yesterday wrote in an Op-ed that the Pelosi trip is utterly reckless and he floated the option that China could retaliate by giving arms to Russia to conduct its invasion war against Russia. This will be catastrophic for the U.S. and the Ukrainian people if this happens because this will cost the lives and health of an abundance of virtuous Ukrainian men and women in uniform these admirable people who are just trying to preserve their country acting a lot like our ancestors did approximately 250 years ago in our War of Independence! The Russian government has expended a lot of its best military assets in this invasion of Ukraine war and is grappling with filling this loss; just last week I was reading how the Russian army during this war has lost a lot of its modern artillery guns and is now forced to use old artillery weapons. The Chinese army is a cutting edge modern army with an abundance of modern weapon systems if they throw their arsenal doors open to Vladimir Putin and his Russian Generals that will spell tragedy beyond words for the Ukrainian people. The Ukrainian military is greatly admirable for its heart
and its wise use of limited resources but the truth of the matter is that they are really struggling to stop the Russians from conquering the balance of province of Donetsk and achieving the last of Putin's war objectives and the Ukrainian counteroffensive to free Kherson so Ukraine can get its agricultural export industry from the Black Sea to somewhat the level that existed prior to the war; if China puts its finger on the scale here being a big supplier of weapons for Russia one must conclude it spells doom for the Ukrainian people!
Democrat members of Congress should conduct a conference call with Speaker Pelosi and plead with her not to make this trip to Taiwan! The only thing that will come from this is great harm to America, America will be burned badly! And why, what is the reason so Ms. Nancy Pelosi can feel like she is a great ambassador for democracy and peace in the world; it is selfish beyond words if Speaker Pelosi makes this trip plus it shows the incompetency and dysfunction of the U.S. government, specifically the Democrat government in Washington, that it would carry out this self-inflicted wound on America especially when so many people are giving the Democrat Party a heads up, notification that a colossal mistake is being made here!
