Shocking expose reveals more than 700 survivors of abuse from Southern Baptist leaders and staff

While the Catholic church has suffered much of the attention for hiding child molesters and abusers, the Southern Baptist Convention was outed this week for hundreds of complaints.

An extensive joint report from the Houston Chronicle and The San Antonio Express-News outlined the accusations dating back to 1998. The project took the papers more than six months to gather the details and search for accusers.

The first of three parts was printed Sunday revealing 380 leaders and staff who were accused of some form of sexual abuse. Of those, approximately 220 have been convicted or took a plea deal and 100 remain behind bars.

These accused abusers left an estimated 700 victims in their wake. Some survivors were as young as 3-years-old.

But surely its just Muslims and Catholics that abuse kids ?
Where are threads condemning this religion ?

When will Southern Baptists condemn the actions of their church in covering up these scandals ?

Holy shit! Is kid fucking getting more predominant, or is it just coming to light more?

Both. Coming to light more, and kids have been thoroughly sexualized via the cultural changes of the last 50 years.

The behavior is recorded through all of history, and occasionally condoned by various societies. It's not new.

They had a big tadoo in my area over rape allegations at a Baptist compound, seems the leader was forcing underage girls to have sex...

Sadly, the sexual abuse of children has been going on since ancient times. I can't remember which Roman emperor it was who swam with his little "minnows."

It is especially reprehensible when the clergy indulge in it because they have the children's trust. I have heard too many stories about clergy who tell the children they molest that "God" somehow approves of their actions.

When people place their magical beliefs above the law, these abuses happen and are covered up.

In Victorian times it was legal and remained so until the age of consent was raised to 16 in the 1880s.
Yes, I know.

There is a thread like this on the Europe forum every day. Just substitute muslim for baptist. And there is a sizeable clique of posters who jump on it to denounce all muslims for the actions of a few. And if you point out their idiocy you will be called a paedo/rape enabler.

But they must be having a day off today. Or they are only concerned with kids raped by non Christians. Either way their absence from this thread highlights the gap in their morality.

The sick actions of a few baptists or catholics does not mean that they are all paedos. That would be a nonsense and you would be rightly castigated for suggesting it was so.

Its the same with any religious grouping. Only somebody from an ill educated underclass would suggest otherwise.

I do not know the Southern Baptists situation. But the Cathoic one is indicative of some larger Church's. They sold out. By the time Vatican 2 was fully implemented by the early 1970's, the Catholic Church put nails in its coffin. Plus the gay pedophile priests issue is disgraceful.

Religions are institutions that will protect itself and cover up problems like any other big organization.

This has nothing to do with "magical beliefs". It has to do with human nature.

I see this all the time on USMB. It is a sad fact that there are people who dedicate time and energy to fomenting religious and ethnic strife. Many of these same folks try and brand all LGBTQs as paedos, as well. There are a bunch on USMB who post only when the accused perp is non-white and/or has an ethnic sounding name that isn't European. We live in a sick world.

I find the cases involving religion to be of special interest, though, for two reasons.

First, people who work for religious institutions and may hold religious titles have a way of influencing the young to submit to abuse because the connection to the religious beliefs that the child is being taught; an "in" that most creeps don't have. I remember reading of a case in which a pregnant teenager was made to apologize to the church congregation, but guess who the father was.

Secondly, it is not considered acceptable to delve into a religious group's beliefs and practices until problems with these practices become so obvious that the shit hits the fan.

The situation of the Baptists is different from the Catholics because they do not have a centralized church government, as do the Catholics, so it was much easier to conclude that Catholic higher-ups were involved.
