But then they switched (at least the way they ran it in my liberal town) to where the “takers” would first itemize what they needed. Was it pajamas? An arts and crafts project? A new Barbie doll? No. They listed expensive items - an iPad, a TV, a leather jacket, etc.

Someone then told me that they then sell these items for cash.

Again, it isn't just black people who have seen an increase in the OOW birth rate. Blacks it went up from 20% in the 1950's to 70% today, but white folks, it went up from nominal levels to about 30% today.

So the better question is WHY are more kids born out of wedlock now? Well, the main reason is that marriage is kind of an expensive proposition. OOW, you are just on the hook for child support if it doesnt' work out. Marriage, you are on the hook for Child support, alimony, and division of assets.

The other part is that it's just not a stigma that it was in past generations. My cousin had a kid out of wedlock in the 1970s, and it was a family scandal. My niece just had a kid out of wedlock (they will get married later this year), and no one thinks it's a big deal. Because it really isn't.

And most people on assistance are only on it for a few years.

I say, three children into the food stamp equation, max. After that, single mommas who get pregnant with a fourth, or fifth, will just have to tighten their belts and skip the steak and Carnival cruises.
