CDZ Should The United States Government Pay Reparations For Losses Causes By The Shutdown of Our Economy

Should the government pay reparations for economic losses suffered by it's citizens due to COVID-19

Presently in the United States, millions of individuals have lost their source of income due to a government mandate to stay at home during the COVID-19 crisis. As a result of this loss of income, presumably things that American citizens have worked to obtain are in peril of loss, such as their homes, vehicles, educational opportunities, etc. And of course any default or late payments on loans, credit cards, mortgages, etc. damages one's credit score.

Even when the economy opens back up, for many Americans the damage will have already been done. You may be able to return to your job but you have a 3+ month deficit where you had no money coming in, yet your monthly expenses continued to accrue.

Because the government mandated the disruption to your ability to earn a living for yourself, do you think the government should compensate those who have suffered a loss via reparations?

Why or why not?
/——/ Since the government has no money other than what it taxes from the taxpayers, we’d be compensating ourselves. Better to force the states into bankruptcy and free them of all the bad deals they made over the decades and finally live within their means.

It may not have been a lot for each individual, but couldn't you say they already did with the stimulus?
The $1,200? What if you earn $1,200 a week? The stimulus payment only compensates you for one lost week of work. What about the other 11 weeks if the shutdown lasts 3 months? And the damage caused by not having the money when you should have had it and didn't, such as late fees, higher interest payments.

And what about damage to your credit score, resulting in higher interest payments, inability to rent a new place because you didn't have money to pay on the place you were living when the shutdown started, etc. Things like that.

it seems to me that a person earning 1200.00 per
week SHOULD be able to have significant savings to
get him thru a disaster lasting a few months. What's
wrong with that jerk? His parents failed him.

since the situation affects EVERYONE-----who would get the "reparations"?
Everyone who can show a quantifiable loss due to loss of income as a result of the shudown.

that would be a HUGE undertaking in accounting. The neediest among us would have the hardest time
coming up with the necessary paperwork. Some of the most needy do not have PAPERS (in my city)

The government basically is paying reparations at this point. Certainly the amount needs to be higher but the government is attempting to address the harm to citizens caused by this pandemic.

The government cannot afford to fulfill your dreams of reparations

your polls asks should or should not

the real answer is the government can‘t afford to pay

The shutdown is the result of an alliance between the democrats and the Chinese to destroy what this country is. Don't expect the democrats to have any interest repairing the damage they are causing.

So are you asking if the government should basically make everything go away? Pay each person whatever their lost wages may be, force the credit companies to keep credit scores as they were, things like that?

You asked about reparations, you didn't specify that those reparations needed to be the exact amounts each individual may have lost during this crisis, or that it had to involve non-direct losses which may occur.

Sure state governments need to do this as they shut down the country not Trump

I'm not sure what the OP means by "reparations." It seems like us, paying us.
What our corrupt government should do is a debt jubilee. Have the fed buy all debt of the 90%. All mortgages, student loans, car loans , credit card debt...all goes to the Fed.

Hell they do it for big banks and corporations, why not the people.
That's a very interesting proposition.

Most everyone who works and receives a paycheck has check stubs showing their gross and net wages and the pay period dates. Various government agencies have records of what companies have paid their employees so demonstrating loss wages should not be difficult at all.

If you're paying a mortgage or rent you'd have documentation of your monthly mortgage payments for sure, your rental lease ditto.

Listing of your bills you were unable to pay because of loss of income such as utilities, car payments, credit card bills, etc. while you have no income should be the same documents you have when you're paying them.

The damage to your credit scores might be harder to quantify but one can certainly demonstrate a point-in-time when it was one score and when it began to decline because of late or missed payments. Or letters showing credit declined due to your now lowered credit score.

I would estimate that it would take the average person less than 2 hours to pull the documents listed above. That's not too ardurous a task in my opinion, if it will net you at least consideration of compensation for what you've lost.

Nassau County did not force anyone to close; a lot of food stores have closed because the workers don't want to get sick.

you are limiting benefits to middle class, literate, people with stable homes. You might be amazed to learn how many USA people, SIMPLY, do not live that way.

I think she knows far better than you do how such is not the case.
