Shohei leads off with a home run and pitches 5 shutout innings. Ruth never did that.

Why more likely wrong? You dont think a big strong ox like Ruth could throw 90? Every 5'9" shortstop in the minors throws 90 mph.
He probably did, we don't know though.....

The Box Score Stats of the 1910s & 1920s

  • Innings Pitched (IP): How long the pitcher stayed in the game.
  • Earned Run Average (ERA): The average number of runs a pitcher allowed per 9 innings.
  • Strikeouts (SO): Simply how many batters they fanned.
  • Walks (BB): How many base-on-balls they surrendered.
  • Hits Allowed (H): The number of hits given up.
  • Complete Games (CG): A massive stat back then, tracking how often a pitcher threw all 9 innings without being replaced.

They did not know velocity, type of pitch, rotation, etc like today

But they did know pitch velocity just 15 years after he last pitched. So, barring some so far unknown, sweeping genetic event in the human species, its fair to say they could throw just as hard as 15 years later.

likely but still speculation, educated guess
but he did have a career ERA of 2.28 so yeah, he was really good

Not all speculation is equal. These are educated guesses.

But I think the main point is that a great athlete like Ruth would have been a great athlete in any era.
You think ruth could hit a johnson, maddux, clemens type pitchers?

they threw pitches ruth never seen before

he would need to really adjust with hitting practice

not to say it could not learn but hell of a learning curve too

as for hitters today, they can hit 100, how well would ruth do?

if ruth grew up today he would have no problems...

He does so for another seven years sure.
so far batting is ok but pitching .73 ERA......on come on, that is absurd

he'd due for a HR or two which will bring that up fast, maybe just early luck?

we will see

Where does protectionist rank Ohtani?

Your call Gurl?

I think, personally, that Ohtani is young, but possibly the greatest MLB player EVER.
Time will tell.

I think he is 31, not so young......in fact I don't think he was all that good with the angels for many years
dodgers appear to have transform him or he did it himself to how well he's doing today

learning, maturity, skill development.....sure played a part

better hitting/pitching coaches absolutely can too

And some OFF TOPIC suggestion that Coach Mike McDonald is 100% the reason why the Seattle Seahawks won the Super Bowl.

Troll me, "We Don't Care"

Coaching in the NFL matters.
