In what was one of the greatest displays of power-baseline tennis in recent years, Vicky Az ousted Serena in three sets last night in New York.
Serena has a long history of suffering fake injuries in important matches like this, coincidentally at the very moment when it becomes apparent that she will lose. This was the case last night, when she was down a break in the third set, and Az blasted an un-returnable down-the-line shot to kill Serena's best opportunity for a return-break. She bent over in faux pain after running for the shot, while the replay video showed that - basically - nothing happened to injure her. Early on in her career she would blame the phantom injuries for her loss, but she gradually realized that this was viewed as being a poor loser, and now the posture is, she says the "injury" didn't affect her play - knowing that her adoring fans will see this is quite heroic.
Having watched quite a bit of her play this year, it is incredible that anyone was able to beat her. Her serve has been outstanding - possibly the best ever in women's tennis - with pinpoint control going along with her never-diminished power. Her ground strokes have always been incredibly powerful, and they remain so. And despite her size (and advanced age) she still gets around the court amazingly well. But Azarenka never gave an inch. Even having watched it, it's hard to believe that Serena lost.
She is a great American champion. A hundred years from now, her name will be listed in the same category as Babe Ruth, Wilt Chamberlain, and Jimmy Brown. But for women's tennis generally, I think it's a good thing that someone else will win this Open.
