Perhaps the trauma & disgust from what they did has made these men not want to be who they are, so they opt to become an entirely different person?

Not that mutilating your body will make that possible, but that might be the reasoning. I am against this stuff, probably more than you are...but it's possible PTSD plays a role in the decision.
