They have been training heavily for several years for this current heavy attack. Putin can't win this one but he can be very destructive with his thugs.

The Russian army is using the tactic of surrounded the city with mines in order to trap the Ukrainian insurgents. So they don't have access to resupply of food, water, and ammo. Eventually starving the insurgents and forcing them to surrender.
