Russia does not have any limited objective. Putin requires a complete occupation of Ukraine, and a vassal state with a puppet govt. The Russian army's strategy is to bring up the artillery and pound a city into rubble, and when the defenders have no food or water, the Russians can go block by block with the artillery leading the way, block by block. Ukriane supposedly has 2K civilian casualties now, imagine what a week will bring.

Putin tried a US style shock and awe followed by maneuver, but they totally failed in surrounding and isolating cities and bypassing them to reach the border. Now the Russians are trying to blow up rail lines to keep people from escaping. If Ukraine can get enough fighters to the western border, the West can deny Russia the airspace to bomb from above the range of Stinger's and give the Ukrainians enough Javelins to sort of form a pretty insurmmountable defense, sort of like what US Grant did on the second day of Shilo. Make it a killing field.

In short, Putin may not have a way to win, and no way to survive without winning in terms of the objectives he set himself.

No-fly-zones are not just illegal, but nearly impossible to accomplish against a large, local, power.
The US would lose every plane we sent up, because our bases are too far away, and the long flight would make them way too vulnerable.
Russia could just take out whole bases with a single thermobaric missile.
And even if we did shoot down all of Russia's planes, they would then just switch to missiles or artillery, which would just increase civilian casualties.
Its not our territory, so we would be totally out of our league, and be totally humiliated.
We have an incredibly fragile military, while Russia has all the home turf advantages.
