RFK Jr's vow to ban syrup sows concern among corn farmers in Trump heartland

There are hundreds.... Unfortunately the corn syrup is cheaper to use as an ingredient than almost anything else for sweetener. This is why most corporations choose it over the alternatives. It is true that a large segment of agriculture is based on the consumption of high fructose corn syrup. It will no doubt mean that some farmers will need to find a more diverse market for their product. And yes some of them will be pissed.

It is cheaper because the US has artificially high sugar prices, thanks to Tarriffs and quotas.

High fructose corn syrup specifically as opposed to what type of corn syrup to be used as the alternative ? Is there more than one ?

They have this thing called sugar,

it’s what the rest of the world uses.

“In the farms and fields of Darke and Shelby counties in western Ohio, Donald Trump enjoys near-unfettered support. In the 5 November election, more than 80% of voters here backed the president-elect – the highest rates of any counties in Ohio.

But western Ohio is also prime corn growing ground, and with Robert F Kennedy Jr Trump’s pick to head the Department of Health and Human Services, many here may find themselves struggling if Kennedy is allowed to reshape America’s food industry to his liking.

In sharp contrast to Trump’s first administration, when Department of Agriculture officials and appointees worked closely with agriculture interests, Kennedy has vowed to ban high fructose corn syrup and seed oils, a move that would significantly reduce demand for a host of crops.”

Yet another example of the stupidity of Trump voters.
Yep. That's what you get when you put government in charge of deciding what we should eat.

"Dr. Trump will see you now ..."

What do the “shitlibs” (your vulgarity, not mine) have to do with it?

High fructose corn syrup has aways been a GOP thing.

Anyone who attaches politics to an issue like this is ignorant beyond rescue. Look at where all of the politicians have their money invested.
We're not talking Republican or Democrat we just talking elected officials.

Doesn't matter why it's cheaper. Fact of the matter is corporate mentality is what creates the problem. Corporatism has no political party.
It also has no conscience which is where in this rare instance I agree with government intervention.

Changes have been a part of progress and better health choices throughout our history as a nation, and yes battles to stop changes because it stops the money when changes occur will always occur in an effort to keep the money rolling, but when changes are made for the better, America always rebounds in a better position if the changes were good.

Indeed. Politicians shouldn't be deciding what we eat.
As if they are the ones personally doing so because of some kind of weird bias or belief they have. 😆

No, it is based on data, and then the fall out, and then the science that indicates the problem if the trend or addictions have no exit ramp. Don't stand in the way of good prevailing over something bad just because money will shift from a bad thing to a good thing.

Syrups have been being produced and made WAY before all these high fructose syrups were invented.

These companies will just have to go back to the old ways of making syrups, jams, jellies, and such.

RFK isn't looking to ban syrups and what nots.............he's looking to ban the BAD sugar products, BAD chemically created sweeteners, and TOXIC made corn sweeteners.

There's tons of other ways to make sweetened products without all these dangerous and toxic ingredients.

RFK just wants us back on REAL foods, not chemically created ones.

More Republican nanny state actions.

Yep I can see it now.... The Democrats will seize an opportunity to grab some votes from the corn farmers. Unfortunately there are not very many of them.

Stand with us against the evil Trump administration who is simply trying to make America healthier! Nobody should stop the production of high fructose corn syrup for the benefit of the American people! Renounce this evil chicanery by voting them out and voting in a Democrat who will give blessings to the corporate beasts destroying the health of Americans and their children! Think of the children!

I'm sure it was supposedly "data based" in the first place. Politicians shouldn't be deciding what we eat.

You need to take that up with the OP.

The market for high fructose corn syrup was born out of US agricultural policy. And Republicans led the way.

You don’t like the fact that politics comes into it because you don’t like to admit that the GOP has always been slaves to Big Agra, or you just don’t know anything about it.

out of one side of your mouth. You whine that HFCS is used because it’s cheaper than sugar.

When I point out that it has been US policy to limit imports of sugar creating artificially high prices, you reverse course and make up some gibberish about “corporate mentality”

Then why do they get to decide who has to take a vaccine?

Address the entire post or just shut up.

Again politician's work for the people, and if the data shows danger to the people, and the people want change, then the politician is their to give them that voice for change.

This is what Democrats do They pander to the lowest common denominator. In this case there will be some disaffected farmers who will switch parties because it suits them and certainly that is their choice to make. There are so few corn farmers however but I'm not sure the Democrats will waste their time chasing it down. But this is definitely how they operate.

I'm not sure what they would be promising the disaffected farmers. We will guarantee the continuation of this extremely poisonous substance so that you can continue to make profit on the The sickness the American public!
Yes you can trust us!

Not really Kennedy's business.
He is appointed to the position for the people in representation of, and just like all that came before him (Michelle Obama and her healthy eating program for school's), he is going to do his job regardless of the possible money shifting involved or the feelings that get hurt.

True, but I don’t need government making that decision for me.

I have to agree that the choice should be our own. Perhaps a warning should be printed on products that contain corn syrup the way it is printed on the side of a pack of cigarettes.

Most of Michelle's healthy meals ended up in the trash.
