Republicans offer fraudulent tax reform, the alleged FairTax

Here is the rub....once the feds create a "VAT", what's to stop them from raising
it? Every country that created that tax has raised it considerably at will. No thanks,
I'm not wanting to open that door for them....because they will raise it, as sure as I am
that the Sun will rise tomorrow.
We're on an unsustainable track. The Deficit is 1 $trillion!!!
We need to either cut spending....never happen.
Or we need to raise revenue. If not a Fed sales tax, then who pays the freight? "Only little people pay taxes"
Agreed, small sales tax is a bad idea, but its the only workable idea.

Small sales tax in 20 years will be a BIG sales tax. It's not a workable idea, it's a bad idea.
There is too much history from other countries who started with a "small sales tax" and now
it's much, much higher. I don't want that burden on your grandchildren and great grandchildren.

You can't IGNORE the problem. It won't go away. We spend more than we take in.

$32T interest payments are approaching $400b a year, soon to be $800b a year.

Republicans are trying to avoid a disaster w/o cutting Defense.

You have NOT put forward a better or more workable plan to solve the Debt crisis.

Can you explain why Republicans didn't think there was a "debt crisis" when Trump was president, even though his deficits were bigger?

The double standard makes people think that Republicans don't really care, and they're just pushing propaganda, the end goal being more tax cuts for the rich.

OMG, so here we go with your "workable plan"...a VAT. Then when they keep spending more and more,
politicians can just keep raising your "workable plan" from 4% to 6% then when they spend more, Raise it to 12%, then to 15%.
Then when they spend more they will raise it to 20%, then to 27%, on and on and on.

You gave them the keys to the car, dude, and you're okay with that....got it.
I say force them to start spending less, that means even their pork barrel spending,
which would increase under your "workable plan".
I'll tell you one thing.....socialism loves your "workable plan".

A flat tax of 30% is a lie. It affords the opportunity to the very wealthy to reduce their actual tax to 0%, while the working class still pay close to 30%.

It makes the current US system even more unfair and uneven than it already is.

Flat Tax with no cut-outs......It's the only way to be sure.

I could care less if some rich guy can afford it more than I can....At least he will pay the same rate as his secretary does.

That and I'd not mind seeing tax lawyers/tax preparers having to "learn to code". ;)

Both sides scoring points against the other side, is always scoring points against your country. That's to be ignored at the level of this board's discussions.

Hardly anything is not just trolling anymore and it seems to be even acceptable in 'zone 1'.

According to my math, all the Feds need to do is ADD a 3% or 4% Fed sales tax instead of turning the tax world upside-down.

A new sales tax eliminates the fight over where to cut spending.

They can and should do both if that is the route they choose to take.

1. No. You are correct. The DC clowns never have a problem with the Debt or Deficit when they are in-power. Republicans want to cut taxes (to spur GDP growth), and democrats want to throw mo' money from helicopters. Newt was the last Republican to Balance a Budget, when Clinton was president. No democrat House/Speaker has that I recall?????

2. If the Newt/Clinton team could balance the Budget there may be hope that the McCarthy/Biden team can also balance a Budget. Miracles do happen occasionally.

And unless the 16th amendment is repealed what's to stop them from re-imposing the income tax?

I think we should have a federal consumption tax, not to replace all other taxes, but to be earmarked for the deficit.

If Congress spends more than the tax would cover, the consumption tax would simply go up. If they spend less than the taxes collected, it goes towards our national debt.

People are not concerned about spending because it doesn't impact their lives. If everybody had to pay (poor, rich, middle-class) then more people would demand spending reduction. They would be pissed about spending money like 100 billion on Ukraine, or several hundred billion on something we can't control like climate. Or the millions Democrats are going to spend in the 1.7 trillion dollar bill that funds museums for LGBTQRST people, a wax museum for black people, and a trail named after Mooochell Obama.

First time you went to LaLa-land. Pols suck for cash, its what they do.
The wealthy pay for tax loop-holes, its what they do.
"Only little people pay taxes" Remember?

Perhaps we need to codify it at, say, 5%, with a Constitutional amendment. Lock it into place. And add a balanced budget amendment. No spending above revenue levels.
Then, the only way fed-gov gets more money to spend is by growing the economy.

Republicans want to cut taxes (to spur GDP growth),
And that doesn't work. It doesn't actually add any money for investment. The debt is financed by T-bills, which takes the tax savings right back out of the economy.

and democrats want to throw mo' money from helicopters.
That does work.

Economies grow from the demand side, not the supply side. If there's demand, someone will supply it.

Democrats understand that, so Democrats create better economies.

1. BULLSHIT. Stick with FACTS, not PARANOID FANTASY.
We have a sales tax here in PA. Its 6%, and has been 6% since the 1970s. The PA income tax sneaks up a little every so often, but its not the killer tax that dem states like NY and CA have.

2. The US economy is 70% merchandising, so if the small sales tax went too high sales would suffer and the donor class would beat the sales tax back down to profitability. All you are doing is whining about something that won't happen.

3. You want to cut $1Trillion in spending? Okay tell me what specifically you would cut. Remember SS is going insolvent in 2035 and Medicare is going bankrupt in 2024. Here's the Budget:
Discretionary Spending
Defense $753b
Non-defense $733b
Total $1.49T

Mandatory Spending
Social Security $1,115b
Medicare 746b
Medicaid 452b
Other 660b
Interest on Debt 379b
Total $3.39T

Yep, there is a movement for a Constitutional Convention of States. If 38 states pass a Constitutional Amendment it's done.
