"This does not bode well for farmers. With their water allocations dramatically cut, some crop growers are fallowing large portions of their land. Cattle producers, whose pastures are nearly barren, are selling off cattle since they have nothing to feed them. This has serious implications for the area’s food availability and prices as the affected region accounts for about a third of the monetary value of U.S. agricultural production.According to the most recent U.S. Drought Monitor, 96% of the West is being tormented from at least partial drought. California and Nevada are now sitting at a 100% drought level after two years of horribly dry conditions."

"So why should you care? Farmers and ranchers in Utah have already experienced water cuts of 70-75% compared to last year. This means the planting of crops has been cut and crop yields will be limited. The trickle-down effect from these limited crops will affect all of us."

Farmers and ranchers in Utah have cut water use 70-75% compared to last year
Farmers and ranchers won’t be able to feed their livestock and will be forced to sell out of state. This will impact meat prices for years to come

And so it goes. Many crops will not be harvested this year because of the extreme drought in almost every western state. Cattle will be sold because the ranchers will have no feed for them over the winter, cheap beef now, more expensive next winter. Food prices will increase as we have to import food from other nations. And many nations are experiencing extreme weather events that are destroying some of their crops. So there will be competition for the food that is available. That will increase prices for all.
