Verse 1 is simply and opening statement of what will be talked about in the following versus. It's just the "introduction" to the creation or organization of the universe. Then comes the discussion and how and when it was done. And, finally a conclusion of the completed universe. And, in reality, when you read chapter 2 verse 5, it's possible that God created the universe first spiritually and then physically. In other words, he drew up the plans before executing them. Or, everything we see physically were first created spiritually but of a finer material. Something to think about.

Verse 2 is for sure. But, it's not connected with verse 1. Verse 1 is simply in a technical writing class, an opening statement. I look at verse 2 more of the idea that matter was here but unorganized. And, what were the "waters?" Water as in H2O? Certainly not a "Big-bang."

The basis of monotheism is a creator God. It's not a coincidence that the first chapter of the first book of the first monotheistic religion is about the creator God creating everything.
