President Biden Weighing Executive Actions On The Border With Immigration Powers

The White House is considering using provisions of federal immigration law to unilaterally enact a sweeping crackdown at the southern border.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House is considering using provisions of federal immigration law repeatedly tapped by former President Donald Trump to unilaterally enact a sweeping crackdown at the southern border, according to three people familiar with the deliberations.

The administration, stymied by Republican lawmakers who rejected a negotiated border bill earlier this month, has been exploring options that President Joe Biden could deploy on his own without congressional approval, multiple officials and others familiar with the talks said. But the plans are nowhere near finalized and it’s unclear how the administration would draft any such executive actions in a way that would survive the inevitable legal challenges. The officials and those familiar with the talks spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to comment on private ongoing White House discussions.

The exploration of such avenues by Biden’s team underscores the pressure the president faces this election year on immigration and the border, which have been among his biggest political liabilities since he took office. For now, the White House has been hammering congressional Republicans for refusing to act on border legislation that the GOP demanded, but the administration is also aware of the political perils that high numbers of migrants could pose for the president and is scrambling to figure out how Biden could ease the problem on his own.

White House spokesperson Angelo Fernández Hernández stressed that “no executive action, no matter how aggressive, can deliver the significant policy reforms and additional resources Congress can provide and that Republicans rejected.”

Executive Order? Deploy on his own?

I think that the legislation is filled with poison pills as usual and yes he should act using executive powers to close the holes in the border...it's a win/win...

Sign 'HR2', and we'll get a lot more border security. But as everyone knows, the only reason Biden is doing this is because his "surge to the border" policies aren't going over so well, and he needs to buy some more votes.

If I understand you correctly, you are admitting that Biden could have shut the border down a long time ago but did not.

It appears that we are not worthy of having capable honest people in power here, we somehow don't deserve that. I think the only course left to us is to accept whatever idiot savant that gouges their way into office or is installed by righteous process and should be treated royally, and not examined too closely. The new emerging fact processing systems should make everyone happy, being on the same page and end all the confusion.

All he had to do is leave it as it was when Trump left. Any fool who invites a thief into his home deserves what he gets. As you castigate Trump endlessly you never look at your own. Joe is a congenital liar. He denies and denies some more or parrots' words and that is presidential to Progs. Inside you. You know the truth. And if you do not then the nation deserves its destruction. Unfortunately, many innocents go down with it.

But his entire 2020 campaign was about him being the Anti Trump. Now he is suddenly the Proto Trump? How is this a good thing? Never a better time to vote 3rd or even 4th party. Hell, not voting at all sends a clearer message, and would have no downside. Voting for either party suggests some kind of rudimentary approval and trumpeted by the "winner" as a huge mandate to run more scams on us. blah.

I think that it sounds like Biden is thinking of doing exactly what Democrats have said Trumpers are racists for wanting done.

What happened to:

"we can absorb the migrants!"

"They have a human right to seek assylum!"

"You're afraid of the brown replacement!" "migration has never respected borders!"

"Stop attacking migrant children!"

It sounds like Biden just says whatever it takes to get elected.

There is and will be plenty of well-deserved schadenfreude and expressions of “Three Years Too Late!” coming from Republicans if Biden — as he must — actually introduces by executive order some of the hoped for bipartisan measures just recently rejected by Trump Republicans in Congress.

The Supreme Court during the Trump presidency finally agreed, more or less, that a president could so act. But the necessary increase of funds to secure the Southern border will not be part of such an executive action, and more funds and agents are needed asap.

There are certainly some Democratic constituencies that will oppose any adoption of the reasonable parts of Trump’s previous border policy. They can be reassured that if Trump is elected there will be a truly draconian assault on millions of undocumented or just not fully documented & fully work eligible — thus “illegal” — workers.

But the coming expected spring increase in formal applications for refugee status, indeed the huge wave of such immigrants given tentative papers and allowed in over the last three years, makes this measure absolutely necessary.

It is true that were the numbers fewer Biden’s policy might be manageable. After all, all such entering the country are at least given fingerprint and photo checks and a quick review — as in the past was given automatically to refugees arriving by boat onto our beaches even from Cuban jails.

But the numbers that will soon be arriving are just too great at present and the variety of countries these people are coming from makes the policy especially dangerous from a security point of view. Further, these people often lack any real support network in our country.

This single issue may well lose the election for the Dems, but a quick and frank and decisive move now would do wonders for the Democrats’ chances. I fear the Dems will blow this last opportunity to get ahead of the immediate problem, which would also better enable them to address the larger issues concerning a humane and orderly immigration policy and providing a “road to citizenship” for “Dreamers” and other longterm residents who help build up our country and have broken no other laws, working hard under very poor conditions and without crucial legal documentation.

Will this cost Biden the critical Illegal Alien vote? They're the largest component of the living democrat base of "voters"

Ahh....third party ...if only!!

It is total bullshit. Biden breaks the border after the last election and now he's going to fix what didn't need fixing before he was elected. It's election year bullshit for the Dem faithful to consume.
