If you're a tennis coach, stick to tennis.

In Texas, a math teacher/coach was suspended and later resigned, after he made inappropriate remarks to one of his ninth grade students following the death of Bin Laden. He told her "I bet you're grieving" and there was also a reference made to "her uncle's death." The student is an American-born Muslim, so this was regarded as profiling or harassing her for her religious affiliation. When the student became distraught and reduced to tears, the teacher asked why she was crying; and when it was explained to him, he said something like "Oh, OK." From one of the members of the tennis team he coaches, he is a good man and did not intend to hurt her feelings to this extent by making a bad joke or insensitive comments (this student did not want to lose their coach over this issue, but it had already gotten too much publicity in the media). However, the girl felt so injured and threatened by these comments, her mother and the head of a local Islamic group both complained formally to the school, so that the teacher was suspended without pay. He will finish out the year, but has resigned and will not return after that.
What is your opinion on this incident?
Do you believe the issues can be addressed and resolved so nobody feels unsafe and both the students and teachers can return to school as before?
Do you believe it is better to get rid of the teacher and consider that resolving the issue? Do you think that is too harsh for a verbal mistake, intended or not, that could be apologized for and corrected since no serious physical harm took place?
Your comments please!
As I suspected, the teacher was put on "administrative leave" not "suspended without pay"
A better question would be "Has teaching become so bad that they have to hire idiots like this?"
