Three New York men and a 16-year-old boy have been arrested in a plot to attack a Muslim community with explosive devices. Brian Colaneri, Vincent Vetromile and Andrew Crysel, ages 20, 19 and 18 respectively, were arrested on weapons and conspiracy charges, authorities announced on January 22.

The three men and the 16-year-old, who is not being identified because he is facing unspecified juvenile charges, are all from the Rochester, New York, area, Monroe County authorities said at a press conference. They were planning to bomb the community of Islamberg, a hamlet of Tompkins in Delaware County, New York, near Binghamton. Police began investigating the men and teen after the 16-year-old made a comment about a school shooting to a classmate at Greece Odyssey Academy.

According to police, three of the four suspects knew each other through Boy Scouts. Two are Eagle Scouts. The three men also all attended Monroe County Community College in recent years.

They all look a bit like the odd kid in class. I dont think that the Boy Scouts give out a bombing badge but Im not convinced that they cant be straightened out given some help and support in jail. Sad how right wing extremists prey on the more vulnerable in our society.

I'm sorry to hear about this. I'm glad they caught them, though.

Rochester used to be one of the friendliest cities in the country. It was a great place to grow up (yeah, that was a long time ago) and all in all most of the people there are still a pretty good bunch to live around. But things have really gone down the crapper there; radicals and gangs have been increasing for a couple decades now, giving the whole area a bad name. Maybe it has to do with the big corporations moving out, like Xerox, and Kodak folding.

Binghamton, btw, is nowhere near Rochester--it is on the Pennsylvania border.

That’s not to say most conservatives advocate for direct violence against Muslim Americans, but the right’s rhetoric hostile toward Muslims certainly creates a toxic environment which facilitates some conservatives to indeed commit violent acts against Muslims.

In fact, we see proof of that on this very forum, where many on the right are attempting to propagate the lie that Islam is the ‘same’ as white supremacist and other rightwing hate groups.
