Three Toronto Police Service officers have been arrested in Spain following an allegation of sexual assault.
According to Barcelona police, three Canadian police officers were charged in relation to an incident in a taxi on May 13 in the Ciutat Vella neighbourhood of Barcelona.
One suspect was charged with “sexual assault and injuries” to a woman, while another was charged for an “attack on an agent of authority,” similar to resisting arrest, the Regió Policial Metropolitana de Barcelona said Monday.
The three men were arrested on Friday.
The Spanish police did not identify the suspects or the police force for which they work.
However, Toronto police confirmed Monday that the three men were off-duty members of the force who were on vacation in Barcelona.
“The allegations are serious. On arrival in Canada, one officer was suspended from duty as authorized by the Chief of Police in accordance with the Community Safety and Policing Act (CSPA). The two other officers will also be suspended upon their return to Canada in the coming days,” said Stephanie Sayer, a spokesperson for TPS.
“As the individual members’ matters are now each before the courts, the Service is unable to offer further comment at this time.”
