Nicotine addiction is far more tenacious than heroin addiction. It takes on average six months to "kick" a heroin habit but it takes years to be free of the nicotine compulsion.Nictone is said to be as addictive as heroin, and I can attest from personal experience that getting off it was a nightmare, but I made my choices. Just like the dead father Philip who left children behind.
We all make choices. If they were easy, we'd all do the right thing.

As with Elvis Presley and other famous personalities, Hoffman's death by heroin overdose is brought to our attention by their celebrity. But by no means will Hoffman be the only person to die this month, this week, or quite possibly today, from a heroin overdose. In fact it is likely that somewhere else in New York City today another corpse with a needle in its arm has been quietly zipped into a black body bag and unceremoniously carried off to the Bellvue Hospital Morgue. And the cause of all these tragic ends, whether Hoffman's or those of the anonymous ordinary "junkies," will be attributed to heroin. But heroin is not the cause of the vast majority of these "overdoses." The War on Drugs is.
The first thing to be understood is it is entirely possible for someone to lead a relatively normal life while addicted to heroin. In fact there are medical professionals who believe certain individuals' health can be improved by the stress-relieving effect of heroin (or other opiates). The key factor in such a prospect being that of properly administered, precisely measured, sterile doses -- a critical factor which is effectively eliminated by the utterly insane, wholly counterproductive War on Drugs.
I am not suggesting that heroin be made as available as Tylenol. But what must be considered is the fact that neither Hoffman nor any of the ordinary "junkies" whose heroin is sold to them by "dealers" have any real idea of what those little glassine bags contain. Until they actually "cook" it up and inject it they have no way of knowing the strength of the dose or what it's been "cut" with.
The fact is pure undiluted heroin is a powerful toxin. Ordinarily it is "cut" by dealers with quinine or some other equally benign carrier substance. But the dosages are rarely if ever measurably the same from one street "batch" to another. It also is a fact that a dose which will sustain a long-term addict who has developed a strong tolerance to the drug will stop the heart of a first-time or occasional user.
If clean, precisely measured doses of heroin were made available to certified addicts a very ugly and unnecessary situation could be eliminated. Specifically, the effects of the street crime committed by impoverished heroin "junkies" would end, Hoffman would continue to entertain us for years to come, and his children would not be made to suffer the loss of him.
The War on Drugs is one of the worst things a corrupt and incompetent government has done and is doing to America.

I smoked cigarettes for thirty-five years. I managed to quit in 1985 with the aid of Nicorette gum and Tootsie Roll lollipops. But it was at least ten years before I was free of the occasional compulsion to smoke a cigarette. Even now I experience a slight, occasional twinge.
What a sad and terrible loss of a real actor.
Damn drugs.
The drugs didn't jump into his bloodstream. Oh, and let's legalize them, right?
The guy had kids, and chose the drugs. I feel bad for his family, because they will always know he chose getting high over seeing them grow and prosper in their own lives.
Sorry, I'm about worn out with giving more of shit for people than they do for themselves.

You know nothing about drug addiction. Of course all drug addicts say "Screw my kids. I'd rather do these drugs that may kill me, and leave them fatherless."
Nicotine and alcohol kill more people per year than heroin, and those are legal. Addiction of any kind is terrible, and can tear a family apart.

vox also said that I say that drugs should be legal.
You both need to stfu because, as usual, neither of has a frikken clue what you're talking about and you both lie about it.
Oh and I don't give a shit about trailer trash maroons like you. Get lost, loser. Or, spelled your way, looser.

don't glorify drug legalization - pot included - you won't be addressed as a drug proponent.
before that - stfu. It is because of you and the likes of you - enablers - kids get hooked at a young age - as this poor man did as well - and then it haunts them for life. and eventually kills.
Legalize them, right?

Where, EXACTLY, did I "glorify drug legalization"?
How, EXACTLY, have I "enabled" drug addiction?
vox, you say some really stoopid crap and you're a chronic, serial liar.
Where drugs are legal, and addicts get their shots administered, this kind of tragedy is rare.

nobody can compete with your lies, luddly. you are the champion.
you support the pot legalization - as it is "harmless". It is harmful and it causes addiction, plus it is a gate opener drug very often. Telling it is harmless - is glorification of the addictive substance.
It is you who don't know anything about drug addiction, it looks like. And MikeK as well.
Once and addict - always an addict. THAT is the verdict - for life.
This guy was clean for 23 years!!! Yet it managed to catch him AGAIN.
Because it is a death sentence, unfortunately.

While I agree they should be legal, I really doubt rich celebrities are going to go to clinics with street people and others to be watched over.
