Bad Medicine: 3 Dr. Ben Carson Claims That Simply Don’t Add Up

" People who believe in the separation of church and state suffer from schizophrenia

The debate over church-state separation has existed since the beginning of America, but Carson arguably was the first to medically diagnose it. From his remarks to a Georgia church in October:

“The pledge of allegiance to our flag says we are one nation under God. Many courtrooms in the land on the wall it says ‘In God We Trust.’ Every coin in our pocket, every bill in our wallet says ‘In God We Trust.’

“So if it’s in our founding documents, it’s in our pledges, in our courts and it’s on our money, but we’re not supposed to talk about it, what in the world is that? In medicine it’s called schizophrenia. And I, for one, am simply not willing to kick God to the curb.”

This was clearly a joke. (We hope.) But even as a joke about mental illness, Carson’s characterization of schizophrenia as a disease that makes people have contradictory beliefs about the separation of church and state is so wrong. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, schizophrenia is marked by hallucinations, disorganized thoughts, physical agitation, and delusional beliefs such as believing that neighbors can control one’s behavior with magnetic waves. "

Why are religious delusions and hallucinations so prominent in patients with serious mental health diagnoses, especially schizophrenia , patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, often have delusions that either exalt the status of the patient (eg, the patient is God's representative on earth) or denigrate the patient (eg, God is sending messages to the patient specifying his/her sinfulness and need to be punished).

Not my area, but to guess, schitzophrenia occurs in the same area of the brain as religiosity.

Carson disqualifies himself from the presidency with those beliefs in exactly the same way he disqualified Muslims from the presidency.

calm down folks------I have never met a neurosurgeon who had the slightest
respect for the science of psychiatry-------they, generally, mock it

Carson's quote:

"I guess it depends on what that faith is," he said. "If it's inconsistent with the values and principles of America, then of course it should matter. But if it fits within the realm of America and consistent with the Constitution, no problem."

Asked whether Islam is consistent with the Constitution, Carson said: "No, I don't -- I do not."

Carson's brand of Christianity, that considers the Constitutional separation of church and akin to a mental disease,

is not consistent with the Constitution, either, so, as I said, he disqualified himself.

there is NO separation of Church and State, read the first amendment very carefully..., OK?

provided by the Wildman for your perusal.

Amendment I. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

any questions?

“The pledge of allegiance to our flag says we are one nation under God. Many courtrooms in the land on the wall it says ‘In God We Trust.’ Every coin in our pocket, every bill in our wallet says ‘In God We Trust.’”

And once again Carson manages to exhibit his ignorance of the Constitution and its case law, in this case First Amendment jurisprudence.

This sort of ignorance of the law, and contempt for Establishment Clause jurisprudence and the Framers’ mandate that church and state remain separate, clearly render Carson unfit to be president.

Separation of church and state isn’t a ‘belief,’ it’s a settled, accepted fact of Constitutional law, a mandate from the Framers.
It's not in the Constitution. The only mention of separation of church and state came from a letter Thomas Jefferson wrote to the Danbury Baptists in which he assured them that they need not worry about government interference.

Why don't liberals scrutinize Hillary? She has lied and said more stupid things than Carson could think up? There is no seperation of church and state. Another myth made up by liberals. Why did the founders make Churches tax exempt?

Excuse me, Delta4Embassy, where did you get your medical degree?

Was there some argument that you left out in your post, because in between the first part and the second part, it looks like something is missing, like some intelligent thought, for example!

Delta, you never told us you knew Carson personally!

That is so cool!

The concept of "separation of church and state" is a modern day invention. It does not appear in the Constitution. A former KKK member appointed to the supreme court by FDR wrote the majority opinion in 1947 which created the political concept of separation of church and state. At the time the Jewish question was an international problem and the Catholic Church was becoming influential in politics and society and it's possible that Justice Black, like most KKK members had an abiding hatred of Papists and Jews and it influenced his opinion of the law. At any rate the belief in something that does not exist in the Constitution might be casually referred or jokingly referred to as schizophrenia. Don't take offense lefties. Most of the convoluted and often contradictory political theories the left adheres to might be considered to be a form of schizophrenia.

The amendment says that the government must keep itself separate from religion. That's what the prohibition of making laws establishing a religion means.
