I don't know much about how or when all of that specific movement started or gained momentum, I just missed the sixties by a year, so I grew up in the whole 70s decade. I'll take your word for it. I had never heard of any of these supposedly mainstream thinkers, but fringe thinkers have been calling for an end to the nuclear family since I was a kid. Nobody's really listening to them. As a genuine card-carrying leftist, I have always known that the "family" is the foundation of the economy the world over.
But I also find the concerns of conservatives for the American family to be completely disingenuous. First off, their definition of "family" is always a straight white married middle-class couple. Single parents are distained, as are working class families. Conservatives decry the number of "fatherless" children in the inner city, even as they lock up young black adult males at increasingly higher numbers, and with minimum sentencing, ensuring that any children they leave behind will grow up fatherless.
The persistent denial of same sex couples and their children as "families", or single parent families is endemic. Look at who is barred from admittance at "Christian" schools. I've had numerous American parents tell me that they enrolled their children at a "Christian school" so they wouldn't have to go to school with black students.
Conservatives are very big on middle class, educated women staying home with their children, to give them the best possible start in life, and even bigger on poor mothers taking on as many jobs as they need to in order to provide for their children, without providing her with mandated vacations or maternity leave like every other first world nation. Think of the impact of Donald Trump cancelling Obama's overtime regulations on poor families whose parents work 60 hour weeks with no overtime.
The USA has the highest rates of both maternal death as a result of childbirth, and infant mortality in the first world. These statistics are shameful in a nation which purports to have the "best medical system in the world". While that may not be true, it is true that the USA is the richest nation in the world, and the issue of maternal deaths and infant mortality can both be solved by universal government funded health care, which you claim you can't afford.
You can afford the biggest baddest military the world has ever seen. You can afford to send a man to to the moon. You can afford to give billionaires tax break after tax break, but you can't afford health care for mothers and their newborn babies. At the same time trying to ban legal, safe abortion and return to a system of orphanages, and back alley abortions.

In addition, Sophie Lewis, a self-described “feminist thinker,” which she proves is an oxymoron, has made a name for herself attacking the nuclear family in her book ‘Full Surrogacy Now: Feminism Against the Family’.
Lewis, an Oxford-educated bulls**t artist, uses pretentious language and provocative statements to camouflage her laughably pubescent arguments.''
An example of Lewis’ utopianist jackassery is found in her article, ‘The Coronavirus Crisis Shows It’s Time to Abolish the Family’, where her “logical” approach to combat the virus is revealed as, “Free all prisoners and detainees now… and dismiss all the workers with full pay so they can… pursue laziness for at least the next decade.”
Lewis likes tilting at windmills as evidenced by her desire to “denaturalize the mother-child bond” and to promote “the idea that babies belong to anyone – the idea that the product of gestational labor gets transferred as property to a set of people.”
Lewis further reveals her intellectual obtuseness and foolish anti-family fanaticism by declaring, “even when the private nuclear household poses no direct physical or mental threat to one’s person – no spouse-battering, no child rape, and no queer-bashing – the private family qua mode of social reproduction still, frankly, sucks. It genders, nationalizes and races us… It makes us believe we are ‘individuals.’”

This appears to be a reaction to a particularly defective generation, many of whom willingly endanger their offspring because of misplaced faith in evil belief systems (Evangelical Christianity, Trumpism, Plutocracy).
