Amid lockdowns and “shelter-in-place” orders and social distancing from strangers and even friends, the coronavirus pandemic has been a time, for many of us, of reaffirming the centrality of family in our lives. For utopians of the radical left, though, the pandemic is an opportunity to deconstruct flawed, traditional familial bonds and remake the world along the lines of new-and-improved, collectivist possibilities. As author Sophie Lewis (pictured above) puts it bluntly in a recent opinion piece at Open Democracy: “We deserve better than the family. And the time of corona is an excellent time to practice abolishing it.”
The author of Full Surrogacy Now: Feminism Against Family, Sophie Lewis’ academic work “focuses on eugenic, bioconservative and imperial feminism, queer and trans social reproduction, Black feminist family abolitionism, hydrofeminism, postgenomics, and Marxist-feminist accounts of care,” which seems like a lot to fit on a business card.
Writing in her article titled, “The coronavirus crisis shows it's time to abolish the family,” Lewis addresses what she calls “the unspoken and mostly unquestioned crux of the prescribed response to the pandemic: private homes.” She criticizes the assumption that we should all “stay at home” to contain the spread of the virus, arguing that 1) not everybody has a home, and 2) private property is already a “fundamentally unsafe space.”
“How can a zone defined by the power asymmetries of housework (reproductive labor being so gendered), of renting and mortgage debt, land and deed ownership, of patriarchal parenting and (often) the institution of marriage, benefit health?” she asks. “Such standard homes are where, after all, everyone secretly knows the majority of earthly violence goes down… A quarantine is, in effect, an abuser’s dream – a situation that hands near-infinite power to those with the upper hand over a home.”

And yet as extreme as Sophie Lewis’ anti-family, anti-capitalist animus sounds, everything she proposes is simply the end game of mainstream Progressivism: the abolition of capitalism; the abolition of private property; the abolition of traditional kinship; the abolition of literally every single tradition and institution of Western civilization, to be replaced by the enlightened, peaceful, self-regulated structures of communism – just as Karl Marx envisioned. Family abolitionists like Lewis are mainstream Progressives; what makes them seem extreme is simply their unabashed openness about their aims.

Abolish the family? We have seen what the Progressive Marxist Socialist/DSA Democrats did to Black families by driving them into city ghetto's and then destroying their family structures. Can we abolish her and her kind? Why should we have to up with her and her ilk? She obviously doesn't want to put up with 'Deplorables'.
We all have family and extended family where we share commonalities, spiritual communion, intellectual capabilities, traditions and our way of life. Progressive Marxist Socialist/DSA leftists that want to kill off the familial unit must have been born in test tubes and raised by wild animals. It appears that love is not something they've experienced.
Then there was James Angleton forced to retire from the CIA as a barking paranoid lunatic when he made the prediction in the 1970s: that the USSR wouldn’t just collapse, but would just roll over, play possum, go underground and stealthily take over the West’s institutions. While during the same era of 1950's to 1980's, we have Nikita Khrushchev's chilling prediction: " We will take America without firing a shot".
Unfortunately Ms. Lewis is a home grown Marxist Socialist like many of the Democrats supposedly representing us in Congress.
We should however, differentiate that, unlike the Communists of days gone by, today they profit handsomely from producing piles of this drivel, and would go silent the day the checks stopped coming.
Notwithstanding the publishing industry that is dominated by PMS/DSA Leftist ideology which get put right on the shelves of school and public libraries. Go through the Dewey non-fiction classification from 001 - 950, from Computer Sciences to Biographies and you'll find racism, sexism, Feminism, Queer Studies, Environmentalism, etc., etc. everywhere. Name the ideologue and you'll always find their works available. Another example but in the Music category: Sacred Music(783) is considered 'too focused on Christianity'. Too 'religious' for others- or not enough non-Western. And if library management stop purchasing printed music or neglect that section it will either be because of the de-professionalizing of libraries resulting in music-illiterate employees or out of willful neglect because of political reasoning: all those composers that have dominated Western musical development are, after all, mostly Dead White European Males which deserve to be 'disappeared' if Post-Modernists within the library sciences have anything to say. I've made it my mission to improve and promote the music stock in a public library near me. I may not be able to secure more purchases to bolster the music stock but I can keep encourage musicians to utilize our stock.
It's an industry, just like Man made earth warming (aka Climate Change), there are mountains of these books published every year, at least half of which are never sold, eventually rendered into toilet paper. The other half are sold to libraries, or bought by people to either impress their "progressive" friends, and eventually rendered into toilet paper too.
