Odd food combos that you like

I think '69 was about the time that the US started using a lot of high fructose corn sweetener in place of cane sugar in soda pop. People can really tell the difference in Coke. LOL, I just recently picked up a can of Coke and noticed it said, "original taste" You can still find Coke in glass bottles that come from Mexico that are made with cane sugar. I wonder if you could find Dr. Pepper the same way. Yep, you can, but it is spendy--$4 a bottle in six packs at Amazon.

I'd love to indulge, but I no longer shop at Amazon.

I know how to make root beer and ginger beer, so if I could find a good recipe, I could make it myself.

Meantime, I've gotten over drinking soda.

Applesauce and Crackers.

When I was 4 or 5 this older couple across the street used to watch me while mom was at work. About the only thing I remember of them was they gave me applesauce and saltines for a snack.

Of course my tastes are more refined now so it's applesauce and Club crackers. ;)

I had a lot of peanut butter and jelly and cream cheese sandwiches as a kid.

Yeah, us too. I might have a soda now and again in a mixed drink but that is about it and the other half gave up sodas some years ago--she was heavy into diet Dr. Pepper and diet Coke, but, IIRC, she became concerned with the health effects and gave them up.

Good for both of you!

I used to stick to a small serving of homemade ginger beer, which is good medicine when you've eaten too much -- soothing for heavy stomach and queasiness.

When I moved from the coast to SD, I think I left behind my fermentation mojo. I just haven't been able to get the brew to fizz. Same with sauerkraut. It just won't ferment for me.

Every Seattleite knows the best tartar sauce EVER comes from Ivar's

I recall seeing Ivar make appearances on the KOMO kids show "Captain Puget" back in the 50-60s.
IIRC, he and the Capt. would get out their guitars and sing non-R rated sea chanteys, etc.

Alas, Seattle is history, as far as I'm concerned. But Ivar's is one of the things I miss about them.

When my niece comes to visit next month, I'll have her bring me a few jars of the tartar sauce.

Gawd I hear you.
Most of that once great city has gone too far Left. Off in the Dark Side.
Really enjoyed that city back in the 70s before it became a popular yuppie destination.
I just drive thru now going from here to So. King county and back.

BTW, I think Ivar's still has some branch restaurants outside of Seattle.

Ginger beer makes great Moscow Mules, LOL. Re: fermentation. It appears that the elevation of Sioux Falls averages about 1500 ft.--maybe that has something to do with it? Maybe someone on line has had the same experience and can give you a work around. I remember my mom saying something about dry beans never getting done in Denver due to the elevation and the lower boiling temp.

Kroger's/Fred Meyers offers Mexican Coke, at about $2 per bottle.
My wife can't do corn, but likes this Mexican Coke as an occasional treat.

Back in the 80's while my grandparents put my quadriplegic uncle to bed at night (a process!), I used to watch the A-Team, Knight Rider, Magnum P.I., Simon & Simon, etc in the living room...and pig out. 😄 One of the things I came up with was a chicken and olive sandwich. Id slice up green olives and put them on bread with shredded chicken and mayo. At the time I thought it was weird even though I liked it. Now more than 40 yrs later I'm thinking maybe it wasn't so weird, I dunno... :dunno:

Also, back when I was a fledgling butcher in the early 90's, after working a few hours I used to go to the Jewish cafe next door and often I'd be eating their soup at 9am. Several people looked at me like I was nuts and even said so! I didn't care...and I STILL eat soup for breakfast sometimes.

Now as for weird COMBINATIONS? Well, I put cinnamon in my chili. Is that weird?

My son dips his tortillas in apple sauce instead of salsa! Quite honestly, just seeing him do that almost made me heave a couple of times! 😆

Try making kombucha.
It has some fizz and is very healthy for digestive track, etc.

Yeah, Mexican Coke in glass bottles is pretty commonly available in stores, but I was surprised about Dr. Pepper. Other outlets than Amazon sell it as well. I just posted the Amazon link because it was the first one that popped up.

Cinnamon in chili gives an interesting twist to the taste. I'll do that and also a couple of tablespoons of cocoa powder, gives a mola twist to it.

Soup for breakfast no more weird than breakfast for dinner.

Naw, Buckeyes claim they invented chili with Skyline Cincinnati Chili and it has cinnamon in it. You can find a number of recipes online for it.
It doesn't surprise me too much that someone else does it somewhere... I just think it's not particularly popular in most places that's all.
