I think a large part of the liberal tax view is not a goal to raise revenue, but the goal is to stick a thumb in the eye of someone better off. The AMT and Capital Gains taxes seem to have no other justification.

I am starting to think Rush really is right on this: Obama has engineered a continuing crisis in the economy so now he can raise taxes claiming he needs to in order to close the budget deficit.
Now, we know that raising taxes to close a deficit never works. Never. Michigan has tried this for 20 years and the result is the same: higher deficits and higher taxes. Why does anyone think it will be different this time?
Fortunately no one, not even Democrats in Congress, want to be seen as raising taxes in a recession. So I think this idea is going down the crapper rather fast.

Obama, in a Feb. 9 Oval Office interview, said that a presidential commission on the budget needs to consider all options for reducing the deficit, including tax increases and cuts in spending on entitlement programs such as Social Security and Medicare.

I have no problem with the possibility we can reduce the debt and rein in entitlements. That is what he is saying. Reality will of course be very different. Since he figures to be a one-termer, what better time to cut Social Security?
