Indeed..all of that is true. However, if you think rent control is the only, or even the primary thing driving these undoubted fact--you should think again. Not that rent control doesn't play its part..but the majority of people benefiting from rent control are, in fact, Black and Brown..and working poor, for the most part.San Francisco has been doing that for the past 5 years since covid. I don't know if rent free is still occuring. SF also and has strict rent control. The result, housing shortages increase every year for the last 30 years or so. Want to buy a house in SF, prepare to fork out at least $1.5 million. Want a one bedroom apartment, $3000 unless it's a crappy neighborhood but still cost $2000. There are parts of SF that have virtually no blacks and Hispanics because of housing cost. Whites and Asians owned nearly all real estate in SF.
