NRA Issue: Guns Don't Kill People. People Don't Kill People. Mental Illness Kills People.

What is responsible for the epidemics of mass shootings?

  • Guns

  • People

  • Untreated Mental Illness

Results are only viewable after voting.
The title says it all. The best way to get people to stop mass shootings is to enact universal healthcare. The NRA must realize this epidemic's only logical end if the true source isn't addressed.

As with religious violence, there's lots of mentally ill people but not 1% become violent. It's not a mental health issue, at least not entirely. It's people. We are afterall predators (both eyes in front for ranging, can digest and utilize meat, etc.)

Guns are the means, but not the cause or source of the problem. That's like blaming cars for drunk driving fatalities, or the syringe for a heroin overdose.

Problem's upbringing and factionalizing of humanity. Research conclusive proved over a generation ago when children are brought up with a deficit of affection they become self-destructive and violent. Our culture too plays a big part and much blame can be placed at the feet of religion, and not the ones your mind may be going to right now, but Christianity since we're mostly a Christian country. And when as adults we divide ourselves from one another into smaller groups or cliques, it becomes considerably easier to marginalize and dehumanize those not in those cliques. Instead of our being a nation of over 310 million Americans, we're Democrat or Republican, Liberal or Conservative, Christian or non-Christian, rich or poor, etc etc. When you do that, people of one clique develop resentments and hostilities towards opposing cliques. Get enough resentment and the result's conflict including violence.

Decades of ever more restrictive gun control laws haven't prevented crap, so obviously the gun isn't the problem. The problem is people...and perhaps the drugs other people force on them, but still people. Something has happened to us as a society over the years...and I am not sure how we're going to fix it short of turning into some orwellian/huxleyean nightmare.

First off, it is not an epidemic. People with mental illnesses have done violent things throughout human history. For most of that time, there were no internet and mass media to loudly broadcast each incident. The knowledge remained local.

It is also false that this is an American phenom.

Thought republicans were going to do something about mental health? Oh wait republicans don't do anything.

Read the old Bloom County comics in the privy from the early to late 80s. Gun violence and control is a theme in it.

This is not a new problem nor is anyone serious about fixing it.

Which people kill more people in mass shootings? Mentally healthy people or mentally ill? I hope you voted accordingly.

Non-sequitur.

Wrong. Mentally ill people need treatment. If they can't afford it they go buy a gun instead which is cheaper. Then they go out and use it "as therapy" instead of real therapy they can't afford. The two issues are as interrelated as warp and weft of the same fabric.

You idea only barely begins to address the issue if the reason people do not get treatment because do not have insurance.
Everyone has insurance now.
Thus, non-sequitur.
Not everyone, and not by a long shot, pun intended.

The poorest people (sons living with a single mother) are the ones doing the shooting. Go out and price mental health care and premiums. People can't afford them. And the number of qualified therapists of a decent quality and type of background to treat seriously disturbed persons is nil. There is a crack as wide as the Grand Canyon between would-be shooters and the type of affordable easy-access and level of mental care they need. You don't "triage" a seriously distubed person. And the hurdles of getting a disturbed person into a qualified psychotherapists's office (the most expensive care in the mental health field) are immense.

Whereas with universal healthcare I can see clinics staffed with all levels of training in therapists where walk-ins can just get right in to talk to someone.

Also, we need a broad blanket of a new infatuation with morality. That's a thing that Paint here doesn't want to add, I'm sure. Turn on your TV or browse the internet if you want to get an idea of where these disturbed persons come up with their ideas in the first place. There's art & free speech and then there's incitement to destruction. There is a very very fine and ever thinning line between what we see in media and what belongs swinging by its necktie or in federal prison for life.

No handguns or large-capacity long guns, and universal healthcare, including mental health. It's not complicated, kiddos.

FBI stats indicate that knives are used like 6 times more than rifles of any type to commit murders. Hands and feet etc. used 3 times more than rifles. Yet you still hold on to this irrational belief that your so-called "assault rifles" are a big part of the problem.

For that matter the guy could've walked in with dynamite and taken out two or three classrooms with one lit match. The problem isn't the weapons, it's the mind behind the hands wielding them. Refer to the OP for details.

Crazy people love an unarmed society...
The point is this isn't about guns. If every kid in the school had a gun on them it wouldn't save them from a suicide bomber. See what I'm saying? Mental illness. The walking time bombs need easy-access clinics with free or highly affordable skilled care.

Everyone has insurance now, and so access to health care is universal.
Problem solved.

Well I agree that in essence it is in the mind of anyone who wants to kill.

But we don't allow people to 'walk around with dynamite' because dynamite is so dangerous- a dangerous mind becomes more dangerous with more dangerous weapons.
