Why is abstinence a bad thing?

Children were taught abstinence when I was in school. Not everyone learned the lesson perfectly, but when practiced faithfully, abstinence has an excellent record at preventing VD as well as pregnancy. Further, none of the children in my school pursued homosexuality or transsexuality for that matter. No need to push the envelope that far, even among the rebels.
