NPR is a non-profit that is mostly member supported - I am a member and I pay $60 a year (which is not required, obviously). That way, they can avoid having to rely on advertising (thank god - so annoying). They bid on grants from the CPB which makes up for about 1 to 2% of the money used for broadcasting.
