I am not really understanding Greenland. I don't see it as much of a strategic issue.
That’s ok. The process isn’t controlled by what you see or can’t see.
I really think it is the minerals, especially the rare earths.
Most people recognize that
that consideration is also one on the list of why President Trump is trying to make a case for “getting” Greenland.
And I am not understanding the problem there.
Also, not significant. What you don’t understand doesn’t control.
First, Denmark does not control Greenland's mineral resources, Greenland does.
Yep. And what does that have to do with the issue?
And they have already contracted out the rights to several rich rare earth deposits.
We know. And?
Commercial production is a way off, they desperately need to scale infrastructure. But already, we are promised 25% of all rare earth minerals, devoted specifically to the defense industry.
Which wouldn’t be available to us if it is effectively controlled by our major competitors.
In any event, your thesis is mistaken. There are
several inter-related reasons for why we’d like to make sure that Greenland isn’t controlled by Russia or China. Amount those reasons:
1. Strategic location relative to any long range nuclear missiles aimed toward the USA.
2. Those rare Earth metals, etc.
3. Shipping lanes.
4. Messaging not to our own side (like Europe and Canada); but to our potentially violent enemies. What you don’t see doesn’t Morse them from seeing.
This is somewhat similar to why President Trump went after Maduro. Not just drugs. Not just getting oil. But smart of a much larger agenda. Denying Venezuelan oil to nations like Russia and Iran. Among other things, such petroleum (needed by those bloody regimes) being cut/off (or at least massively confined) serves to impede
their war efforts. Currently, Iran’s theocratic leadership is waging war against the Iranian people. Starve the ayatollahs.
Again, unlike you,
they “get it.”
