It's rather obvious to anyone with 8th grade math skills that we have an issue with certain entitlement programs going forward. The issue is how to pay for what we've promised people. Now you can demagogue those responsible enough to want to try and fix those problems or you can work to solve those problems. One is a rational approach and the other is nothing more than politics as usual. What you shouldn't do is pretend that there isn't a problem!
I think one way to ensure that those that pay into a government program get what they paid for is to cut off the people that didn't pay into the program from getting benefits. Too many people receiving Social Security and Medicare that didn't pay into the system.
To be eligible for social security retirement and Medicare you have to have worked for at least 40 quarters (10-years) paying into the system.
Social Security Retirement and Medicare are not the same as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and MedicAid which provide some basic income for blind, disabled and elderly persons with little or no income).
