McKinney Staffer Grabs 11Alive Photog

In the hotly-contested race between Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney and challenger Hank Johnson, polling officials expected turnout to pick up again in the final hour. McKinney and Johnson put on a bitter fight for the Democratic nomination in the 4th Congressional district which includes most of DeKalb, and small parts of Gwinnett and Rockdale counties.

According to DeKalb elections director Linda Lattimore, about a 20 percent turnout was expected -- low, but better than usual for a runoff.

And the busy pockets were scattered throughout the county, making it hard to detect a wave for one candidate or the other. It just added to some of the tensions in an already tense runoff.

Like any campaign, McKinney’s supporters let the television stations know where they’d be on that final day.

When 11Alive photojournalist Kathy Bourn first caught up with McKinney, her supporters waved some signs while she remained in her vehicle.

Her staff asked photographers to keep their distance -- which they did -- until McKinney rolled down her window and motioned to a reporter. The photographers approached, thinking she was about to give an on-camera interview.

At that point, a staffer again got between the vehicle and 11Alive's Kathy Bourn.

"That's right, and I'll touch you again, if you do it again," the staffer said.

It's a sign of just how high emotions are in this runoff battle right now.

McKinney herself had complained about the actions of a male Capitol Police officer during an altercation at a checkpoint earlier this year.

This was a case of a male staffer touching a female photographer. Bourn said no blows were thrown, but her wrist was grabbed and there was some bumping.

McKinney campaign manager John Evans says he would look into the matter.
