McCarthy likely short of Speaker votes...

From the NYT live blog....

Josh Brecheen, Republican of Oklahoma, votes for Jim Banks for speaker.

Murmurs and oohs from the crowd as Lauren Boebert votes for Jim Jordan. She had previously declined to say who she would vote for as an opponent to McCarthy.

Dan Bishop has voted for Andy Biggs for speaker. Lauren Boebert has voted for Jim Jordan. Andy Biggs has voted for Andy Biggs. That’s three against McCarthy. He can lose four.

Some light guffawing from Democrats as two Republicans vote against McCarthy before the House clerk even gets to the “C” surnames.

Prog politicians vote in legislation in lockstep. Republicans' legislation is watered down compared to what it can be. We see the endless RINOS who come to the forefront in crucial votes for Progs.
The President promised Americans bipartisan legislation, and delivered - Infrastructure. Gun Control. Chips. etc.

If disgruntled Republicans want to whine and snipe at one another because they can't find anyone to lead them, that's okay.

It's shaping up so that the compromise candidate will be George Santos, according to George Santos.

  • Term limits
  • Publicly-funded elections
  • Ranked choice voting
  • Independent/Bi-partisan Redistricting Commissions
  • Open Primaries
.... would at least be a start. Not perfect by any means, but these changes would alter motivations and behaviors pretty quickly.

Term limits works both way. If you get a really good rep then why not keep him/her?

Why should the money I earn be used to pay for you running for office?

Ranked choice voting is great if your candidate wins but bad if somebody else wins.

There is no such thing as independent/Bi partisan redistricting. It is as partisan as it gets.

Why should a Democrat be allowed to chose a Republican candidate or visa versa?

I have a much better idea.

Lets have the Congress meet only once every year for two weeks. Mainly to hash out a defense budget and a few other things. Then the representatives go back home and work at a real job. That would great reduce the damage Congress could do to the country and greatly reduce the money that would be spent by the wasteful government.

Lets also do what our Founding Fathers first had it and have the State Legislatures appoint the Senators. That way they will be a much better check to protect states rights.

Democrats seem to understand that they often are outside the norm values for our country, they stick to the Cult narrative to survive.

Oh boy... McCarthy wont pull this out. If he does he will be one owned speaker. Bought and paid for by the nut extremists.

Dems 100% unanoumous. Why wouldnt they be when they were so successful last term? Biden ushered through the most substantive legislative agenda since JFK.

Andy Biggs has 10 votes... he wanted to overturn the 2020 election. That is the state of the 2023 GOP. Insurrectionists are leaders.

15 Votes against McCarthy. How many will switch back with some cool committee assignments and party financial support for next election?

Nobody from CA or other longtime blue state should be in any type of gop leadership position.....They are all left of what passes for the "center" these days.

All those POS scumbag liberal Republicans who voted for McCarthy, I hope they choke on Pelosi's finger.

I am an independent, so gridlock is not altogether a bad thing. Doesn't the speaker decide what committees bills go to, to live or die and have some control in committee assignments?
I ask that as a serious question, not knowing the answer.

The speaker of the house has so much power. And putting that in the hands of a liberal republican like McCarthy is just stupid.
Those that voted for McCarthy are either liberal republicans themselves. Or they're those retarded "lesser of two evils" voters.

its over... round one at least...

Jefferies 212
Mccarthy 203
Biggs 10
Jordan 6
Banks 1
Donalds 1
Zeldin 1
The record is over 100-ballots. The first job of the Speaker is to ice enough votes to be elected Speaker.
This will take a long while. They are getting paid AND stopping the Biden agenda.
Nice work if you can get it. GRIDLOCK!!

Democracy at work. That's the way the Founding Fathers set it up. Nobody goes against the democrat establishment and lives to tell about it though.

Really? Geez. Did not know.

Im totally guessing most except the Biggs voters switch over to McCarthy on the second vote and then the wheeling and dealing starts. Who knows?
