Majority of Americans favor wealth tax on very rich: Reuters/Ipsos poll

With that said, I am a huge fan of the "penny plan" to address our debt...Government is bloated, and needs to at this point learn to tighten their belts....I have to do it, you have to do it....Why shouldn't they...

Why? Because then they'd lose their job.

It's not so much government is bloated, it's that the citizens are too comfortable to make any changes. If politicians start cutting this and cutting that to reduce the deficit, and eventually the debt, it means we all will have to do with less things from the government. People would get pissed, hold their representatives responsible, and then get voted out next election.

Well Gator, wonderful story for you, and thank you for serving, from one vet to another. Now as for the story, all of these were your choices....And choices that puts you squarely in the crosshairs of the government declaring that YOU need to pony up more...Now, none of us are getting any younger, and my thoughts are that you are, like myself, headed toward retirement...Tell me why the government needs my hard earned money, more than I do in my retirement?

Well, I never said the government needs your money more than you do, but I will address your comments anyhow.

I believe two things in this matter...

1. It is immoral to be adding more than a trillion dollars a year to the national debt during a booming economy. I do not know if you have children or not, but I do and I think it is wrong they will have to pay for our excesses. Since we do not have a major party that will cut spending, I think it is our moral obligation to pay for what we spend. I do not want to pay any more in taxes than I do, trust me. I have basically zero deductions as I do not run my own business and I have only one child left to count as a dependent. The check I send to the IRS every April is growing each year and I am not thrilled about, but I am even less thrilled with fucking over my kids and grandkids. It is my belief that if everyone had to pay enough to cover our spending for even one year that there would be an outcry for spending cuts.

2. I also believe that the tax code should not be used for social engineering, just to raise funds to fund the government. I would love to see a flat tax across the board with zero credits or deductions. I have less issue with those better off paying a higher percent in taxes than I do with someone making the same as me getting to pay less because they might have a mortgage or more kids at home or any of 10000 other hoops the government has people jump through to get to pay less taxes.

While I can agree with you Ray that 'we the people' have gotten used to voting ourselves largesse from the treasury, our politicians who make the laws have to be accountable...That is why the Penny Plan makes so much sense...Only in DC is not approving an increase in spending marketed to the people as a cut. What I am saying is that if every budget stays the same except for .01 cent per dollar is cut, the programs will continue on while we balance our budget, and at some point start paying down debt...I see that as a win, win....

Here's the problem: We have a tax code where most don't even see the problem. The rich pay for most all of our expenditures, and the rest gets dumped into the debt wagon where most people don't care because it doesn't affect them directly.

Solution: A consumption tax for deficit and debt reduction. You want a war? Then our federal consumption tax goes from ten cents on a dollar to eleven cents. You want free college? Then the federal consumption tax goes from ten cents to eleven. You want government healthcare? Then the consumption tax goes from ten cents on the dollar to twenty cents. You want all three, then the consumption tax goes from ten cents on the dollar to twenty-two cents.

If everybody had to pay for this deficit, debt, and new spending today, you'd see how fast they'd become fiscally conservative. That would protect your kids and grandchildren.

It still would require major spending cuts. To put it better, let me reiterate something economist Walter E Williams came up with:

"I am running for an office in Congress. My platform is, I will not bring any money back to my state. I will vote against all spending bills. Would you vote for me?"

We are going to get there sooner or later are we not? Now I love Mr. Williams...he is spot on with everything he says...But we have to change attitudes, and we don't do that by saying 'it's not possible', and giving up.

WASHINGTON/NEW YORK (Reuters) - The idea of imposing a wealth tax on the richest Americans has elicited sharply divergent views across a spectrum of politicians, with President Donald Trump branding it socialist and progressive Democratic presidential contenders Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders prominently endorsing it.

snip

Among the 4,441 respondents to the poll, 64% strongly or somewhat agreed that “the very rich should contribute an extra share of their total wealth each year to support public programs” - the essence of a wealth tax. Results were similar across gender, race and household income. While support among Democrats was stronger, at 77%, a majority of Republicans, 53%, also agreed with the idea.

Majority of Americans favor wealth tax on very rich: Reuters/Ipsos poll

If this is true, then the experiment called the United States of America as we know it is done....
Well, I'm not even close to rich and never will be, however, I believe that the rich should pay no more percentage than lower income citizens. If taxes were say, 10% of your gross income and you made $10,000 for the year, you'd pay $1,000. If you made, $1,000,000, you'd pay $100,000. You paid more than the low income earner and thus a fair share, more than the lower income earner. Making the rich pay larger percentages than your average citizen is basically penalizing them for being successful. Why would you want to invent and create if you would only be penalized for doing so.
A good example are Communist and strict Socialist nations. There is no incentive, thus they send spies out to the west to steal technology and once stealing it, use it and/or adapt it for their use. Once this nation goes backwards and becomes a strict Socialist or Communist nation, all incentive and technological improvements decline.

However that is the Democrat motto. Good governance is penalizing success and rewarding failure. Once Democrats get rid of white people, and have no opposition to their Socialist/ Communist leadership, it will start the phase of ending this great experiment, and everything we have today will be gone.

Agreed. That's why I wrote the solution in my response to Gator. A consumption tax to eliminate the deficit and reduce the debt would make everybody aware. Currently, only a small part of our country is aware of the problem, and a smaller amount even care. Hell, I'm almost 60 now. I'll likely be long off this earth when our country collapses. Why should I care? But if I had to pay for this debt every time I make a purchase, and pay even more for new social spending, you bet I'd care. You bet I would be going to the polls to make sure new spending politicians don't get into power.

So why do we need yet another new tax to do that?

fk dude, 47% of the country pays no money to the debt. how fking stupid is that? We have the stupidest folks representing our districts. By the way, we took in around 3.4 trillion in revenue last year, the spending is more than that amount. I'm not claiming to be a rocket scientist, but, anything over that amount means deficit. How about fking saying to the folks in congress, fk off and balance the budget?

The check I send to the IRS every April is growing each year and I am not thrilled about, but I am even less thrilled with fucking over my kids and grandkids. It is my belief that if everyone had to pay enough to cover our spending for even one year that there would be an outcry for spending cuts.

So why do we need yet another new tax to do that?

Because that new tax would bring everybody into the ball game. People have no realization or understanding of deficits, debt and eventual collapse. They have no idea where the money comes from which they spend. You know, Obama money?

If we all felt the pain of spending, then the public would turn against those politicians wanting more social programs. They would support various cuts to the budget and take paying of the debt more seriously.

"Lets be greedy as hell and get the government to steal money from other people to pay our bills", said no ethical person ever.

But unless we did it my way, not everybody will pay. It would be politics as usual. Our tax system only taxes most of the people. Other people get away scott free for all cash transactions.

True, I was thinking of changing the system to make everyone pay, but your way works as well. All I want is for everyone to see how much we actually spend by having to pay for it.

sure you did, in that post. you said it was immoral to add more than a trillion dollars, why didn't you say so when obammy did it? seems you are immoral because you have no consistency with respect to the law. therefore you believe your opinion rules. well, knock knock, nope!

are you really going to say you didn't say 'it is immoral to be adding more than a trillion dollars'? Are you really that impure? wow, again, you have zero credibility then.

Let's get in the way back machine all the way to the end of this past November....From The Hill:

"As Congress deals with yet another manufactured year end spending “crisis” that will result in more spending of money our country does not have, a new poll highlights a potential effective solution to the national spending problem that enjoys shockingly high levels of public support across all party lines. That solution is known as the penny plan, which simply requires the federal government to reduce the budget by one penny for every dollar it spends annually over a period of five years.

The new poll, commissioned by Club for Growth, found support for the penny plan runs wide as 76 percent of Republicans, 68 percent of Independents, and 63 percent of Democrats surveyed said they back it. Why not? The penny plan is not some radical policy. It simply requires a spending cut of 1 percent in the next year. The penny plan is not new. Neither is its strong level of support across party lines. This new poll tracks what Tea Party Patriots found three years ago. In that survey, 82 percent said they would support reducing spending “by just one penny out of every dollar spent” over the next five years to balance the budget.

Why does the penny plan have such strong support? Because Americans have come to realize that the deficit problem in Washington is caused by spending too much rather than taxing too little."

Congress must pass the penny plan

Now, I believe that those kinds of numbers mean it could pass in a bipartisan fashion....
