The crowd was Italian and his people in Peru spoke Spanish. He likely spent most of his life speaking Spanish. Spanish and Italian are very closely related.

I've personally not net the man, however, from all I've heard, he speaks American English with a 'Chicago accent".
Funny thing is I know many people that speak, English, Italian and Spanish, some even include the French language all spoken fluently.
