This article contains an amazing series of photos about lava flows and how life comes back when they cool down. Check it out @ Volcano Urbanism Newgeography.com

The Hawaiian lava usually moves slowly enough that a determined person with heavy machinery could build earthworks to keep it off their property. However, that's sort of frowned on.

First, if you push it away from your property, it goes to your neighbors'. Not very neighborly, and sort of uncharted legal waters.

Second, thwarting the divine will of volcano goddess Pele is considered bad juju, even by non-natives. If she wants to take the land, you let her have it.
