The funny thing is, I was actually at Expo 74. In fact, for Christmas I bought my dad a digitizer and spent most of that holiday digitizing a ton of Super 8mm films including some of that very expo. I need to sit down and edit some so I can share them with others.
Side note, if you were there at the time, a year or so back I discovered the "Trash Eating Goat" is still located at the park even today.
And I am for various reasons very much an "extreme conservationist". But with me it is not some shallow political thing. I believe strongly on Conservation. But find "Environmentalism" to be a vile political movement that has almost nothing to do with the real environment.
I hear ya on the profe$$ional Environmentali$m!!!
Yeah, I worked on many of the pavilions during the construction phase. Me & the crew I was with were the last construction workers to leave the site, through a north side entrance/exit post. We were totally exhausted due to endless "change orders" that had all the various trades working 7/12 & sometimes even beyond 12 hour days. If I remember right we left through the entrance with a BIG pinkish colored(?) synthetic butterfly high on top of the supporting post. They had fallen behind schedule so the various contractors were told that their construction crews were now on "Time & Material"(the hard money bids were thrown completely out the window). I did not stick around to hear Tricky Dick Nixon give his commencement speech that morning.
The Russian pavilion, obviously the biggest in size & IMPRESSIVE for sure was a real eye opener for me, in more ways then one for sure! We were warned BEFORE ENTERING THE RUSSIAN PAVILION about NOT COMMUNICATING/NO FRATERNIZING with the Russian personnel. All of us construction workers were dumbfounded like we heard about this type of people control crap about the USSR but for the most part we thought it was Washington DC propaganda. We were busy doing our work when a Russian gal(sharp looking fox!) walked by us. She & me made eye contact so I gave her a wink & I seen her lips ALMOST make a feint smile. We said nothing to each other but her EYES said to me, "I'm sorry but I am not allowed to acknowledge you." All of us construction workers were just blown away by the attitude/FEAR the USSR manifested over their people.
I heard about the housing barracks that were built for the Russian folks so I went out there to check it out. It was a LIMITED ACCESS complex erected behind the former "Washington Water Power" company building(now Avista). Today the complex is of course apartment buildings & is located on E. North Crescent Avenue in Spokane. If I remember correctly only the the western most structures with the medium red roofs & the center structures with the DARK red roofs that are immediately NORTH of E. North Crescent Ave. were reserved for the Russian folks.
No other structures were present SOUTH of the Russian complex save for the Lutheran home(retired Lutherans), the 3 story building with the white roof shaped like a misaligned cross(google maps 3D). The Russians bureaucrats(NOT the workers under them) were obviously intimidated by Americans so seemed to try & isolate themselves from everything that was not related to their cult/religion. When I drove out there to check out the site the street that is now E. North Crescent ave. was totally barricaded off. I had to take the rail road access maintenance road IMMEDIATELY SOUTH of the RR tracks that had been widened out for construction purposes. The complex had obvious Russian security patrolling around the complex, so I made one pass & left the area.
If U could have been alongside me when I winked @ that Russian fox you could have felt the fear residing inside her for even looking @ me. The statist left, the same today as a half century ago.
PS, is the trash eating goat in the general area of the BIG Red WAGON? I remember seeing it but when I take in River Front Park I am there strictly to spot Mule deer lounging around. No Mule doe's/fawns then I'm back in the rig driving west on Spokane Falls Blvd until I reach the Monroe street bridge/Main ave. intersection. I hang a right on Main Ave. descending into Peaceful Valley & I enter Mule deer heaven! If the last time U were in Spokane was a few years ago & U like nature @ it's finest U ought to see it now ESPECIALLY @ night time;

A viewer sent KHQ video of deer running in downtown Spokane. Right now, it's not clear if they were going shopping, or running late to a movie, but it sure

A group of deer was spotted at Cowley Park Tuesday.

Below; Two youngsters spotted close to Gonzaga Prep. The Mulies are more than ever seen navigating in Spokane during broad daylight, like they are losing their fear of humans. They should be like every one & their brother are feeding them!

It's gotta be the availability of fresh water in Spokane city that's drawing the deer & of course the folks that appreciate them. Even the White-Tailed deer in north Spokane are making out like bandits. With deer hunting on the decline the game has definitely changed.
