If he had been black would his demeanor have been the same as that white hulk's? Would he have been smiling and explaining to the police when they first came up, or immediately defensive and combative, more concerned about the chip on his shoulder than his car in the ditch?

The fact that Big Boy started out respectful allowed the officers to interpret his flipping out correctly as mental illness or self-induced impairment rather than lifelong hostility that they could not overcome.

If he had behaved exactly the same way, been exactly the same size, but his skin were black, I think the outcome would have most likely been the same. Of course there are cops who are racist and do not give a black man a chance but assume the worst. The odds that five of them appear together for this stop are pretty low. If that had happened, or if there had been one racist cop in charge of several relative newbies, maybe he would have been shot.

But in the overwhelming majority of cases, people of any color shot by police left them absolutely no viable option.

It may well be that there was easy communication in part because the guy was white. Cops are human. They face black guys with chips on their shoulders making their jobs more dangerous and they can start to develop a chip on their shoulder themselves.

If that's the case in this case, then there may have been a different outcome if the guy was black.

I don't think that the chip-on-the-shoulder problem can ever be solved by police. Black fathers need to solve it by teaching their sons how to speak to police without getting shot. Where black fathers are not present, black mothers will have to take up that slack as single mothers of all colors often must.

My grandmother was from "Deep East Texas" by way of Alabama and she was one of the most racist people I ever met in my life - except maybe her sisters. So she was overly polite to black folks that she interacted with. We once visited my great aunt (her sister-in-law) in old folks housing. There was a black old lady picking up groceries from her wagon to take into her unit. Grandma said, "Miss Maylene, you let my grandson get that for you before you fall!"

Then when we got inside, she asked "Seymour when you play football, do you have to wrestle with n!66ers? I said, "Yes, ma'am. Sometimes." My great aunt said, "ooh, I'd hate to wrestle with an old n!66er. Oscar would be so mad at me for living here with 'em."

Long story to say that it seems to be a lost art of being polite to people that you cannot stand. Black men need to get it back and stop making every interaction with police a test of their own manhood. There's no benefit to being a man, not being punked, being nobody's n-word, or anything else if you're dead.

The simplistic and stupid answer is "in America, everyone can make it." The reality is "in America, not everyone can make it at the same time".

There will be poor people, rich people. But the politics in the US has kept certain people in an unfair situation. It's possible to come out of it, but not for most. Most it is very difficult to get out of the cycle of poverty and violence.

Single mothers are the main cause of poverty. The welfare state is the cause of single mothers. Democrats are the cause of the welfare state.
Anyone can make it in America and the ore that make it the more opportunities there are for everyone. People will make poor choices thats not America. Thats them.
We spent 27 trillion on the poor and they are worse off today.
