Lawsuit: Michigan teacher tried to force Palestinian American student to stand for Pledge

f you don't appreciate your freedom, you essentially spit on those who gave it to you. That's my definition of ingratitude. I'm going back to the SCOTUS ruling now, which broke just about 30 minutes ago, FYI.

I understand freedom perfectly.

You should have the freedom to not recite a Socialist Pledge if you don't feel like doing so.

‘A Palestinian American student in Michigan is suing a middle school teacher and Plymouth-Canton Community Schools, claiming in federal court that the educator violated the student's First Amendment right by attempting to force the student to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. The East Middle School teacher, Carissa Soranno, according to the lawsuit, allegedly told the student, “Since you live in this country and enjoy its freedom, if you don’t like it, you should go back to your country.”

The student, 14, is referred to as D.K. in the suit and is represented in the claim in U.S. District Court in Detroit by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Michigan and Arab American Civil Rights League. The student did not want to stand for the pledge because she believes the U.S. government has supported Israel in the Israel-Hamas war that has devastated Gaza and left thousands dead, according to the claim.

The suit, filed June 25, asks for a judgment that finds the educator's actions unconstitutional and awards damages, claiming Soranno's actions inflicted emotional distress on the student. A spokesperson for Plymouth-Canton Community Schools did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network. Soranno did not answer a voicemail left by a reporter at a phone number associated with her name.

"The right to freely speak — or not speak — is a form of protest that is fundamental to a well-functioning democracy — even when its exercise creates controversy or makes others uncomfortable," wrote Bonitsu Kitaba, interim legal director for the ACLU of Michigan, in a news release.’

West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette (1943): students can’t be compelled to say the Pledge of Allegiance in public school.
According to available data, compelled to stand is not the same as compelled to say. The teacher also implies the student is not an American, which would make this whole farce a lie.

Sorry, if you have been permitted to be here, you swear allegiance until you leave. Simple as that.

You are under the good graces of the American government, act like it, damn it.
Read the very last part of the OP. SCOTUS ruled on this a long time ago. Every teacher and administrator should know this.

Mentioning that citizens SHOULD stand for the pledge, is outside of "the bounds" in your mind?

Yeah, this is why we need to purge lefties from education. And everything else.
SCOTUS ruled on this in 1943, back in the heyday of Communism in America. Didn't you know?

Lefties had nothing to do with this.

This is the problem with multiculturalism

So... in talking to my Dad, a veteran, he's of the mind that while he appreciates my sentiment, he did fight for the kids' right to sit there and act like a total brat. Yes, I can change my mind on a dime, because that's what intelligent people do. Rigidity is the bane of objectivity. And thus I felt it on my conscience to seek the opinion of one whose opinion holds weight on the subject.

Hope all of you have a good morning.

I note that you did not answer my question. You said the teacher used her power to "punish or destroy" the child.

And I asked what the punishment was, or how the destruction was done.

Admit it. There was no force. THe teacher expressed his opinion in response to the kids actions and that was the end of it.

Or it should have been.

It is the TEACHER that is being punished for his speech, not the child.

The teacher has no right to compel the student to say the Pledge. They are in the wrong. The administrators are in the wrong for not enforcing the rules on the teacher. This is taught in Educational Leadership 101 at every school with a Masters program for administrators. I know because I was an assistant principal of a high school with 3600 students.

Wrong.
It is the teacher who attempted to subvert the whole point of a republic.
The student should be praised for being smart and honorable.
It is those who support the crimes by Israel who should be deported.
Wrong you go to school , you follow the rules. you're not going there to exercise your free speech you do that on your own time. School is a dictatorship you do what you're told.. if you work for somebody and there's a rule you abide by it or you don't work there...... You don't know what the hell you're talking ... sounds like another little smart-ass kid. we have a lot of you around here

You and your Master's programs for administrators are what screwed up the entire school system ...you people don't what hell you're doing these days...give me a break

Have the kid's parents testify about why America is wrong to support Israel.

Award the student one dollar for the rights violation.

Deport the anti-American parents.

Cheap way to identify undesireables.

That is ridiculously ignorant and false.
No one knows where the Hebrew were until they went to Egypt around 1600 BC.
But they probably were sheep herders in the Sinai, since that was the only place with a drought.
The Hebrew voluntarily stayed in Egypt for over 400 years.
So around 1000 BC they left Egypt and illegally invaded the Land of Canaan.
And became notoriously disliked for massacring the Canaanite women and children, at places they invaded, like Jericho.
They angered everyone with their slaughter so much that within 200 years the Assyrians defeated them and made them leave.
They never ruled again.
So the Hebrew only have 200 years of rule, and likely it was just the city states of Samaria, Judea, and Israel.
The Hebrew were constantly trying to attack and were constantly defeated.
They were defeated by the Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Seleucids, and Romans.

In contrast, the Palestinians are the Canaanites, the Chaldeans, Amorites, Urites, Nabateans, Akkadians, Phoenicians, Philistines, etc. that go back to 8000 BC.
Fake islamist history. Nobody ever even heard of that s*** outside of the islamist teachings ...the islamist are the conquerors they conquered the entire Middle East. None of those people you mentioned exist anymore, no matter how much you want to try to invent it .. Jews have existed continually for over 3500...... In comparison Arabs are recent Islam is recent...... Not sure where you got your education from but it has to be an islamist institution ..... Islamist muslims always attempt to hide who they are

What an exceptional load. Just about every American who goes to Europe reports more freedom in their life there.
Like what?

Drugs and prostitution?

Those are freedoms we should have, I agree.

But, is that it?
