This is one of the purposes of government. Build and maintain transportation systems that benefit all. Ike saw the excellent road network of the NAZIS and knew it was good for both military and civilian uses. Up to this point America consisted of a bunch of hodgepodge roads vaguely connected together.

 
Every so often the national government does something positive…
 
The interstate system was intended for evacuation and mobilization in case of the unthinkable but it proved to be an economic success story.
 
I-90 would be a nice east to west excursion. Maybe get a camper, head out one day.
