Jonah Goldberg: Liberals panicking over possibility of a 2016 repeat

The 2016 election lives loudly in everybody right now.

On the Trumpian right, “the polls were wrong before” isn’t merely an observation, it’s a catechism.

And on the anti-Trumpian left, it’s a constant source of anxiety bordering on panic. It’s making a lot of folks a little crazy.

My friend John Podhoretz, conservative editor of Commentary Magazine, pointed this out to me a few months ago. He lives in New York City, surrounded by Upper West Side liberals prone to flights of jangly rage if you suggest that Joe Biden has the race in the bag.

“Don’t jinx it! That’s what people said in 2016!” they shout.

Since then, it’s only gotten worse. The fear that the country could reelect President Trump after so much muchness these last four years is almost an existential dread, manifesting as quick-tempered outrage at anyone or anything that might upset Biden’s trajectory.

BJ - and Jonah is a full blown Anti-Trumper

I used to like jonah...till he turned into a Never-Trump moron..........

Why did you used to like him? His conservative values?

Yes.....he is a conservative and I also enjoyed his book "Liberal Fascism." But then he became a Never-Trumper in the face of hilary clinton possibly being President....that showed that he is an idiot.....who doesn't understand the fight, and is the type of republican who let the democrat party throw sand in their face without responding......

If he had had his way, and Trump had lost the election....hilary clinton would be appointing the 3rd Supreme Court pick to the Supreme Court and packing the federal bench with left wing, democrat party activists dressed in robes.....

And it was one thing to be afraid of Trump in 2016 when he was unknown other than being a New York, likely democrat, with no track record....but we now have over 3 years of actual Trump achievements.......ranking him as one of the best conservative Presidents in my lifetime and at least in the last 60 years...... fullfilling all of the things that republican politicians have promised but never delivered on.....all the while fighting both the democrat party and the republican party to get it done..

On top of that, we know that obama, biden and the democrat party leadership used the FBI, CIA, DOJ, and state dept. to get illegal FISA warrants to spy on Trump, and used the FBI to destroy General Flynn.....

Jonah Goldberg's opposition to Trump makes no rational sense in any way shape or form...

He didn't support Clinton over Trump. Goldberg holds all the same principles he had when you liked him. That means you changed not him.

No......neither of us changed, he just doesn't understand the fight.....he doesn't see the democrat party as the existential threat to this country that it actually is....which is why he could be so against Trump and so unconcerned about hilary winning....

Very little has changed in the last 12 years.

More has changed in the last 4 - for the better - than the preceding 24.

Little to nothing has changed outside of having a president that believes insults are presidential.

And you are dishonest ......a troll.

Trump created a booming economy....

He has appointed about half the Federal bench filling it with actual judges, not democrat party activists in Robes......and will now likely have appointed 3 conservative justices to the Supreme Court......this alone was worth electing Trump and you not acknowledging this shows you are not honest. Had hilary won the courts would be packed with anti-American democrat activists creating laws from the bench and backing up unConstitutional actions from the democrat party.

Trump has taken on China, fighting both democrat and republican party hacks to get it done.

There is no way you can honestly look at Trump's time in office and say nothing changed in 4 years..........you are simply a troll...

If empty rhetoric is your thing.................................It's not Goldberg's.

Really Comrade? What are his great accomplishments? Iraq?

Nothing has changed with Iraq.

Other than destroying the isis caliphate? That obama allowed to grow into an area the size of one of our states? He has been pulling Troops out of the region as fast as he can, and has put restrictions back on Iran the one country creating the instability in the region vs. obama giving them 105 billion dollars in cash to fund their nuclear weapon research and supply their terrorist militias around the middle east...

So you are either dumb, or simply being dishonest.

The exact same thing happened under Obama and would have continued under Hillary. It was nothing Trump did. It's going to end bigly in a mess.

With the exception being that nearly all the "never Trumpers" are neocon Bushies...Those people are about as "conservative" (whatever the hell that's supposed to mean anymore) as LBJ.

People would be wise to remember that the never Trump noise level was 10x higher in 2016 and Trump still won. Trump has a LOT more support from the GOP in 2020 then he had in 2016 when a much larger never Trump group supported Hillary. 4 years of 3 SCOTUS nominations, an historic tax cut, staunch 2nd amendment defense has won over many of the 2016 never Trump crowd. The only never Trump people making noise in 2020 are washed up GOP politicians and swamp rats looking for a government job under Biden.
We will see about that in a couple weeks.

Yeah...right........we will see you in November.....

I'd say the Dems have a lot to worry about.

Every poll, pundit and talking head told America Hitlery would be POTUS in 2016.

Surprise.

Polls mean jack shit as 2016 proved.

If you look at other factors......Trump is likely to win...historical precedent shows that the candidate that wins the most votes during the primary wins the election...the group that studies that says this analysis goes back to 1912....Trump had 18.2 million primary votes......breaking the record....obama had like 9 million for his re-election........

It may be close because of democrat party cheating....but historically speaking Trump is in a good place to win.

I agree and when you see the thousands that turn out for his rallies it brings that fact home.

No one seems to turn out for Biden or Harris.

I think its kinda funny that the no nothing polls all show Biden ahead. LOL

Well Goldberg is a well known Conservative so it only makes sense he wouldn't support Trump.
Well Goldberg is a well known Conservative neocon....

Fixed that for ya.

Well that is pretty much today's Conservative position. Generally speaking one speaks of a "Neocon" as someone who supports constant interventions elsewhere. We have had that for all 4 years under Trump so they can't disagree there.
Except that Trump has worked to end the interventions....One of the few things that he's done that I fully approve of.

No he hasn't. He has made hollow worthless statements. Statements that the "neocons" simply note that he isn't going to do anything about and he doesn't.

Yes, he has kept us out of worthless wars, the first to do so since carter. Unlike shrub and o, who brought us endless adventures in the desert, arab springs, supporting rebels in syria, etc.

He has also kept us in all of them also.
Safely getting out of wars is harder than getting into them. Perhaps if he had some support for doing so from the haters in Congress it would be done faster. Heck, at this point I believe he could announce the end of ANY conflict in which we are involved and Pelosi and crew would shriek bloody murder that he can't do it, it would be illegal for him to do it, he's a cad for wanting to do it, etc.

Oh, no no no. You have to consider what you leave behind. Do you leave a power vacuum into which can sweep an even worse administration than the one you toppled? Do you leave the country in shambles and easy picking for one of our enemies? One of the reasons we were as successful in WWII as we were is we were willing to stay behind and help rebuild the countries we destroyed and maintain our presence. Heck, we're still in Europe and Japan to this day. Remember that WW1 destroyed Germany. Who rose to power in Germany after WW1 that caused an even greater conflict? Why do you think NK is such a threat today, if not for the fact that we just packed up and left the conflict, leaving China free rein?

Getting into war is easy. Getting out in a smart way is not so easy. That's why a president promising to "bring them home by Christmas" usually doesn't.

We leave behind a country we helped destroy. Germany suffered after WWI because the world decided to continue punishing them.

Safely? You bring them home. The only hard part is risking your campaign war chest.

NK is no threat to anyone.
NK is whatever threat level their weapons allow them to be, because they have nothing to lose and their leadership is not exactly rational. The bottom line in Germany is Hitler rose to power and launched WWII and no one stopped him. That is my point, that you have to be very careful what you leave behind, you can't just pull your troops out and think everything's going to go back to where it was. Now you have an entire country that hates your guts and will do anything to get revenge. Heck, we knocked over Afghanistan and Iraq because of 9/11. Surely you remember the mood of the country at the time.
