Hong Kong was always a part of China, the Chinese Government LEASED the land to the British Empire, and that lease expired in the 1990's. Now, the Chinese could have been total pricks and just taken Hong Kong back in 1949, declaring the treaty China signed with the British null and void. But they actually held up to their agreement. International law was not only totally on China's side, China showed immense restraint.

Now for Taiwan, the problem is, Taiwan was never an independent country. It was a possession of the Chinese Empire from 1683 to 1895, a possession of the Japanese Empire from 1895 to 1945, and then a possession of the Republic of China. Taiwan still maintains the LEGAL fiction that they and not Beijing, are the legitimate rulers of China. so legally, any conflict between Taipei and Beijing would just be a civil war issue....

The reality is, China and Taiwan have kind of settled into a symbiotic relationship. Taiwan relies on China for labor and resources, China relies on Taiwan for investment capital. Covid has really messed up Taiwan because they can't bring in the cheap labor they normally bring in China, the Philippines and Vietnam.

Frankly, the Chinese just aren't that scary. Their best aircraft carrier is 40 years behind ours in terms of technology, and they only have one or two compared to our ten. They really don't match us in terms of military technology or influence around the world.

Ideally, where we want to get to with China is to get them to embrace more western ideals. That's easily done if we don't get their hackles up and treat them like the enemy. That means, inviting more Chinese over here to learn and visit.

You mean the place the British stole from them after China objected to the British and French flooding their country with opium? They might want Taiwan back? The problem (as you have only slightly noted) is that everyone wants to have an opinion (a good thing) but many have absolutely no knowledge of the world or of any political philosophy. “The right is this …. the left is that”. In China, they should be finished building a massive underground port exclusively for submarines. They are also building the largest submarine factory in the world. Right now they are cranking out three nuclear submarines a year.
