Violence in Jakarta as Muslims demand jail for Christian governor
So yea this is just to give view of what muslims are like.
There are enough of them with common sense that they don't mind picking a christian governor if that person happen to do the job well. Ahok is expected to win easily in governor election.
However, there is something ironic about the demonstration.
You see, this is not a peaceful demonstration. We have riots that happen afterward. Cars are destroyed. No it's not as bad as what happen in Europe. No body died in 200k people demonstration. But we're quite scared. Shit can hit fans and the country can be another syria.
If you see this demonstration, many would think, ah islam again, islam again. See how this religions lead to trouble?
And some liberals would try to defend islam by saying, it's not "true" islam. This people are lied to by using religion. Some corrupt officials are using islam to fool the people.
Guess what. That is exactly what the mass demonstration is all about.
Ahok said that people are lied to by using Al Maidah verses. One possible, but disputed interpretation of the verses suggest that muslims must not pick non muslim leaders. Some, that doesn't want Ahok to get elected, claim that it means they cannot vote for Ahok.
Some muslim clerics argue that Ahok is accusing that the islamic clerics are lying. They argue that it's blasphemous toward islam as a whole.
About 35% of Indonesians think that what Ahok did is an insult to islam. The cops disagree but wait for "expert" opinions and is still "investigating the case"
So go figure. A statement that liberal in US may have used to "defend" Islam is a statement that got Ahok in hot water right now for "defaming" islam.
I met with a taxi driver. He said that he support sending Ahok to jail. He said that "normal" people cannot interpret quran. It requires huge amount of knowledge. Ahok, which is not even a muslim, should have just kept his mouth shut rather than talking about islam.
I think it's best that americans do what the taxi driver wish. Don't even talk about islam. Just stay out of anything trouble making.
