I've never shot a gun in my life.

You need to learn about the function and safety features of whatever firearm you purchased as well as general firearm safety.
I'm sure there are appropriate training courses in your area.

When it comes to stuff like guns, it's a good idea to ignore advice from liberals.
Asking a liberal about guns is like asking your hairdresser about auto repair.
Remember when kids had fathers in the home to teach them this basic stuff?

I'm in my mid thirties. I'm not against guns in anyway, just never have been around them. I've gotten 2 9mm. One for me and my wife. We would like to learn everything we can about weapons with the goal of being able to protect our family and just enjoy shooting recreationally. We also look forward to getting our boys into 4-H target shooting soon. My question for you all is: What are some of the best resources for beginners in gun culture? Is it really necessary? How can I get familiar with old traditional Gun culture?

You need to be super serious about your guns. Its not a toy. Teach your kids never point a gun at someone and they are always loaded. I dont care how good your kids are they shouldn't be allowed to get to them when you arent home. They will play with them and show their friends.

Tell them all the horror stories about accidents that have happened to other people.

I was hunting once with a real pro. The guy respected guns. One day he leans the gun against the garage door and closed the side door. That made the gun fall and it landed on the ground barrel facing me. It could have went off and blew my foot off.

Or one time I went into my friends room and a shotgun was on the bed. I picked it up and pointed it at him and almost pulled the trigger. It was loaded. Luckily his dad ran in and took it from me.

I like clowns, not to be anti clown or anything. Bozo, Binky, Emmet Kelly, the proverbial sad clown. Clowns don't really need guns, do they?

Yes. Everyone should own a firearm. It's a 2nd amendment right and it should be exercised by one and all. Just make sure you take classes, instruction and are properly licensed, get permit for conceal carry. Be a responsible citizen.

I would definitely suggest taking a class if you have never been around guns.

you have been given some advice in seeking professional gun training persons/classes, some of these can be a bit overkill. i am a 98% self taught gun master, (65 years !!) for me it would take maybe half a day at a shooting range to teach you everything you NEED to know about your guns and safety.

oooooh !! do not pay any attention to dudlyknownothing, he/she is a self proclaimed liberfool with guns...., be very cautious of liberfools with guns, they have caused more mayhem than any other political advocacy, e.g., James Holmes, Jared Loughner, Nidal Malik Hasan, Wesley Neal Higdon, Seung-Hui Cho, and here is a list of which i refer:

THE LIST:
– Nidal Hasan – Ft Hood Shooter: Registered Democrat and Muslim.
– Aaron Alexis, Navy Yard shooter – black liberal/Obama voter
– Seung-Hui Cho – Virginia Tech shooter: Wrote hate mail to President Bush and to his staff, registered Democrat.
– James Holmes – the “Dark Knight”/Colorado shooter: Registered Democrat, staff worker on the Obama campaign, #Occupy guy, progressive liberal, hated Christians.
– Amy Bishop, the rabid leftist, killed her colleagues in Alabama, Obama supporter.
– Andrew J. Stack, flew plane into IRS building in Texas – Leftist Democrat
– James J. Lee who was the “green activist”/ leftist took hostages at Discovery Channel – progressive liberal Democrat.
– Jared Loughner, the Tucson shooter – Leftist, Marxist.
– Ohio bomb plot derps were occupy Wall St leftists.
– Harris and Klebold, the Columbine Shooters – families registered Democrats and progressive Leftists.
– Bill Ayers, Weather Underground bomber – Leftist Democrat.
– Lee Harvey Oswald, Socialist, Communist and Democrat – killed Kennedy…

You do know how much 2 9mm glocks cost and not even know how to shoot them?

Not chump change

I just clicked on the fifth page without reading the op. Lol. I see now.

Okay, her's simple guide:
1 - Sell your guns
...
Fin.
You should understand that protecting your family can be realized without gun usage! Earn some money and move to less criminal district, or learn taekwondo or something else, it's pretty simple.

What other Constitutional right requires a license or a permit?

There was a time when just about every physically able male could look forward to free weapons training courtesy of Uncle Sam. Boy Scouts of America (BSA) offers quality marksmanship instruction. Join the NRA if you are serious.

Glocks are one of the cheapest high quality semi auto handguns available for sale in the USA . Also very easy to disassemble . Glock 9mm is a good way to go for a semi auto and probably a model 17 or 19 . Me , I probably would have started my gun buying by buying a .357 S+W 6 , 7 or 8 shot model 684 . Think that they make an 8 shot and I'd get one of the 3 with a 4 or 5 inch barrel . Ruger GP 100 is also a good choice , American made and you have the option of .357 or mild shooting .38s , again with 4 inch barrel . Ruger GP 100 is the most strongly built of the 2 . In stainless it'll still be shooting for the next 2 centuries .

I think revolvers are generally much safer for beginners. I've been shooting guns for about 62 years - and I still prefer revolvers.

I assume that the OP is not a set up post.

Buy yourself a gun safe or gun locks and lock your guns. At least until you learn to shoot them. Then, if you are keeping them for protection store the gun and the ammo separate.

I don't know if you necessarily need to take a gun safety class most of it is common sense. But you do need to fire the damn thing so if you do decide to use it you know how.

If, as implied, you want to do recreational shooting, then join a gun club. You definitely need to be absolutely sure that anyone you allow access to your guns is first not a nut and second knows how to handle the gun, kids especially.

The "gun culture" to which you speak is up to you and what you make it.
