Associated Press Floats Gun Control for Black Powder Muskets, 250 Years After America’s Founding

14 May 2026 ~~By AWR Hawkins

On May 14, 2026, just months before we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the USA, the Associated Press floated the idea of gun control for the exact type black powder muskets that were used in the American Revolution.
The AP used an X post to say, “A musket from 1776 can fire a lead ball at a velocity of around 1,000 feet per second.”
They added, “Imagine what that can do to a human body. Yet under federal and most state laws, it’s exempt from gun regulations. Many antique or replica guns aren’t considered firearms and even convicted felons can own them.”
They embedded a video of firearms historian Ashley Hlebinsky in their post where she explained that muskets from 1776 “are actually, technically, in terms of legal standards in the federal government, not legally a firearm. They are classified as an antique.”

Commentary:
If this were the Bee, I'd be laughing my socks off. This is a serious posting by some idiot at the Associated Press.
Qualification to be an AP reporter: Know the home keys.
Well, AP just blew up the longstanding silly gun grabber arguments that "The Second Amendment was written for muzzle-loading single shot firearms; the Founders would never have allowed civilians to own modern semiautomatic cartridge rifles and pistols capable of firing several rounds in a minute!"
It's not about crime and criminals, never was, it's entirely about disarming the American citizen making them helpless against not only government goons but criminals, Lefty lynch mobs and gang-bangers they allow to run amuck!
Remember how Leftists and Democrats wanted to ban handguns only. Then they wanted to ban “assault” rifles only. Now this. The slippery slope is real.
How many crimes are being committed these days with such weapons? Solving a problem that doesn’t exist is just a waste of everyone’s time and money, in addition to being an affront to Second Amendment rights.
As a former hunter in my younger years, I used a Traditions muzzle loading .45 Cal black powder rifle during hunting season. Muzzle loader rifles are heavy, and you better make that first and only shot hits the target.
It certainly honed my hunting skills.
Now to muskets,
First; Muskets are not accurate passed 50 yards.
Second: It takes more than one minute for and experienced person to reload.
Third; Even Pyrodex makes a lot of smoke.

The Brown Bess had no sights to speak of except a brass bead or blade at the muzzle.
Truly a mass shooter waiting to strike. Just look at his high capacity bandolier! *

Once dems have full control, they will ban everything except black powder guns. Then a month later they will ban black powder because it is a dangerous explosive.

If you are a felon, in many states you can legally own black powder guns. Maybe all that has changed, I am not a felon, so don't keep up on the laws pro or con for felons.

It's also not rifled. The Baker Rifle, a contemporary, was accurate to over 300 yards.

AI says:
The Baker rifle was capable of firing accurately at a range of up to 200 yards in skilled hands, with some accounts suggesting exceptional shots at longer distances, but 300 yards is not typically cited as its standard effective range.
The Baker rifle was not used in the Revolutionary War but was used extensively during the Napoleonic Wars.
Loading the Baker was slower than loading a musket. The ball had to be wrapped in a greased leather or linen patch and hammered down the grooved barrel with a mallet or the butt of the ramrod. A trained rifleman could fire two aimed shots per minute; a musketeer could fire three or four unaimed volleys in the same time.

When I shoot black powder, I use a ,45/90 sabot load and I'm in the black at 400 meters.

Probably because antique collectors are white hobbyists, and these racist commies are neurotic assholes who can't find anything useful to do and need to be annoying attention whores. Disarming white gun owners is a major agenda for them.
