NOW we say that, but early on he thought he was a socialist. I've read Robert O. Paxton's Anatomy of Fascism twice now, and several other "rise of Hitler" volumes, and I am very interested in the fact that they were just inventing all this stuff on the fly. How could they know what facism would become? Mussolini only thought it up the previous week. Ideas were fluid in that time.
I myself am most interested in the totalitarian aspect of Hitler's Nazis (Mussolini never quite got there, ruling Italians being like herding cats).
