The Shah of Iran was ousted during Carter's presidency after the Carter administration let Khomeini back into Iran. Country's like Cuba (Batista), Syria (Assad), and Iran (Shah Reza) were doing fine with good, strong leadership until leftist revolutionaries in America schemed and rigged subversive revolutions in those countries. Those revolutions have demolished once thriving countries.

Why are Iranian protesters calling for the return of the Shah?

The shah kept the peace and kept the nutcase clerics at bay, His brutality was limited toward those who opposed him such as the nutcases.

And how did the Shah get there?

Just the opposite of here (the USA) with the Republicans, they want religion to rule the country as well as a monarchy(dictator). The republican's no longer believe in the rule of law and the separation of church and state.

Why are Iranians Chanting &qout;Reza Shah&qout;?

The Iranian people want the Shah back in part because of a love of their heritage, which they have every right to be proud of. The people of Iran want to Make Persia Great Again. Many Iranians reject the name change that occurred to appease the Nazis and want their country to be called by its actual name, Persia. Leftists can not tolerate any people celebrating their heritage and try to destroy people's national identity.

Here are some pictures of events held by the Shah of Iran in the 1970's to celebrate Persia's history. Those events were reportedly very popular with the overall public, except hated by political radicals. They were similar to in purpose and had an atmosphere like a Make America Great Again rally. They were filled with massive, wildly cheering crowds overcome with intense nationalism. What is there to not admire in that?

This appears to be what they are protesting against.

Well, what is present in today's Iran from ancient Persia? Except of a couple of holidays, including Novruz. The remnants of pre-islamic culture are quite scarce, and can hardly serve as a basis to rebuild the society.
